Help Wanted
« on: March 25, 2016, 11:08:31 am »
I need help in removing and repairing my steering column or someone to do it for me.  I will be glad to pay for your services.

We need to do the RFTH Scouting Run very soon and I need the column repaired before hitting the curves.

2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

I don't mind removing it, but I don't have the tools or the expertise to repair it. (I'm guessing you're talking about the loose tilt mechanism.)

Yes.  It's the tilt mechanism, I think.  The joint right at the bottom of the instrument panel.  I don't think I would have a problem getting it out.  I just don't know anything about going into the guts of it.  I believe Don had said it can be repaired without completely removing the column.  All that needs to be done is to drop it down onto the seat, leaving the pinch-bolt and wiring in place.  I don't have the lock plate supressor, though I could get one at the parts store.

I can do that if you can leave the car at my shop for a couple of days.

I can leave it for a couple of weeks, if needed.  I can't bring it this weekend, but may be able to drop it off during the week.

Column has been disassembled, red loctite added to bolts, bolts tightened, and reassembly begun. Should be done tomorrow evening.

How much does it cost to have you do this and replace the blinker stalk?

the turn signal stalk pulls out and then pops back in. No trouble at all.

I like to shoot for about $15/hr when I work on these cars. Tearing down the column takes 4-5 hours. Are you in St Louis or Seattle? Im not sure what the mileage charge would be  :)

I was thinking of a car in GA.  I'm in St. Louis.

However, my Fiero needs the same treatment (when I get it back).

The stalk pops right out, like Scott said, but if you have cruise, there's a wire that snakes down through the column.  It can be a whole 'nother pain.

Hey, Ron, you could subcontract work to Scott with a profit of $65/hr.  Glad Scott's up here near me.  My labor is in line with Scott's, too.

I think we need to have a workshop day.  Service in the order of signup, everyone turns out to help, we get as far along the list as the day allows, and each person pays, say $20 an hour to the club treasury for the time their car is being serviced.  If the car isn't mobile, everyone comes there.  You're the host for the day.  Throw in some burgers and beer if you want.

Anyone can come watch but if they don't help, they don't get the special labor rates on their car.
