Lake Tahoma, NC
« on: May 30, 2018, 07:41:59 am »
Some of you who've joined us in RFTH when we have based in Asheville, NC may remember Hwy 80 out of Marion, NC.  It's the road that first puts us into the mountains and goes up and under the Blue Ridge Parkway, coming down on the other side into Micaville, near Burnsville, NC.

I just saw a news report that the dam of Lake Tahoma, just a few miles into Hwy 80, is in danger of collapsing.  This dam is the first serious curve going North on Hwy 80 and we are within about 10 feet of actually driving on the end of the dam.  They are saying that they're evacuating thousands of people.  Understood, because it would dump directly into the town of Marion, NC.

There are many lakes along our path for the upcoming RFTH.  It may be necessary for us to do another run of the route to be sure all the roads are still in good repair after this long period of rain.

There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

Don't they usually release water to relieve the pressure?  It would seem to be better to control the water than risk a breach.  The dam may have to be replaced, if too much pressure us exerted.  Supposedly, studies are done to match the dam to the lake, to ensure adequate overflow, etc.

From weather.com (story released today)...

Evacuations have been lifted after a dam in western North Carolina was deemed structurally sound despite earlier fears that mudslides and flooding triggered by Tropical Depression Alberto could cause the structure to fail.

McDowell County Emergency Management ordered mandatory evacuations for all residents living below Lake Tahoma Dam along Buck Creek and along the Catawba River from Buck Creek and Lake Tahoma Road to the mouth of Lake James, based on the recommendation from on-site dam engineers. Water was reportedly spilling over the sides of the dam just after midnight Wednesday morning.

After the dam was examined, McDowell County Emergency Management said there was no danger, and all evacuation orders were lifted. McDowell County Emergency Services director William Kehler told NBC News that the mandatory evacuations impacted "several thousand" residents.

The more complex the mind, the greater the need for the simplicity of play.

Good to know it's sound.  Water should not flow around the edges.  But I'm not engineer.
