86 GT Wheels
« on: August 20, 2019, 10:19:41 am »
I will be searching for a set of GT wheels for my 86 in the near future. I have found a few for around $400 so I am guessing this is typical for a private seller?

I've known of them going for as little as $100 a set.  I guess condition is a determining factor.  If you can find a good set of 17's or 18's, they might be a better way to go.  Like the 14 inch tires, 15's are becoming fewer.  I have been running Kumho's on my 87 and now I can only get 1 size instead of the staggered sizes the GT's run unless I go to some of the higher performance and expense tires.

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

If buying wheels, go with a size that allows lots of tire options.  Stock sizes are getting limited.  17" is the way to go, as it allows lots of suspension and tire options, while balancing between firmness and ride.

You can then do the lateral link upgrade.

I thought only the '88 GT and Formula had staggered tires.

86 and 87 GT's had staggered tires, but only 88's had staggered wheels.

The cool thing about putting those wheels on an earlier car, is that it will slightly reduce the steering effort. (The narrower front rim with its accompanying offset reduces the scrub radius a bit.)
