Fix a Slipping Upper Hinge Pin
« on: July 08, 2020, 07:34:40 pm »
The driver side upper hinge pin in my silver Formula has been slipping down. The door closes perfectly when it's all way up, so i don't need to replace anything, I just needed to make it stay up.
To do this fix, you need a 5/16" steel screw retainer, like this:

First make sure the pin is all the way up. Place a suitable lever under it (I used a breaker bar), and hit it with a hammer as close to the pin end as you can. If the pin is slipped all the way out of the top hole, you may have to jack up the door to get the pin to align with the hole (I did).

Place the retainer over the top of the hinge pin, and place a 7/16" or similar box end wrench over the retainer.

Unless you have a small enough hammer to tap the wrench directly, place something on it, and tap with a hammer to seat the retainer.

The seated retainer on the hinge pin should look like this:

Is this an issue normally, or only if the splines don't secure the pin?

Your fix seems relatively easy to do, so if I need to do this, I'd rather do it before the pin falls down.

Well, so much for that fix. The retainer has popped off. It didn't look like there was enough of the pin sticking up for it to grab. I guess I'll have to check the pin every once in a while, and hammer it back up if it slips.

Does the pin need to be replaced?

The pin itself has a spring metal piece on the end that should hold it in place.  It also looks like the brass bushing has ridden up out of the door portion of the hinge.  I have a couple of devices that AeroDon made up for replacing the hinge pins and bushings.  They're available if needed.  I don't know how they work, but you're welcome to give them a try.

The door doesn't sag any at all when the pin is all the way up, so I'll just leave it be for now, and check it once in a while.

I think I have a set of hinge pins out here that came with the car.  If I do, I'll bring them Saturday.
