Headlamp motors
« on: December 11, 2020, 09:43:29 am »
I’ve noticed when I turn on the headlights on finished popping up before the other. Also it put a huge drain on the electrical. Almost stalling the motor at idle. Is this normal or would new motors help solve the issue?

Alternator putting out 14.4v and battery new but cables look rough.

The torque bushings are shot, time for a rebuild. Not hard to do, recommend ordering parts from Rodney. Just don't lose the ball bearing at the bottom of the shaft

Mine are pretty rusty and both knobs are missing. That’s why I was considering new or rebuilt. Thoughts?

I have a few motors.  I charge $30 per motor to rebuild.  $25 for the motor.  You provide the gears.  As Scott said, order Rodney's metal gears and you can have them shipped direct to me.

Edit:  Sorry, I forgot you had an 88.  I don't have motors, but there's no need to fully disassemble the Gen 2 motors to replace the gears.  The motors aren't linked together, so they aren't designed to raise and lower at the same speed.  I can rebuild the motors for you, though.
$20 labor for Generation 2 motors.

Raising or lowering the headlights on my 88 2.5 has no effect in engine idle speed, so something has to be wrong in your case.

Topnotch, does that mean new motors? Or what do you mean by case?

If all you need are torque pins (bump Stops) I have something that will work for you.  I've been using it on the Generation 1 motors for years.

Likely a short.  That's the only thing I can think of that would do that.  A short would load the alternator more.

Ralph, you should watch the volts when opening and closing the headlights.  If it's a short, the volts will drop.  Or maybe the 2.5 doesn't have a volts gauge.

Yeah, a voltmeter would likely work.

The case where the idle slows when you raise or lower the headlights.
