General Fiero Discussion / Suspension refresh
« on: May 24, 2016, 11:09:44 pm »
Went to put on my front wheels and noticed the ball joints were worn. Went to order ball joints, turned into ball joints and other stuff. Other stuff turned into the whole suspension. I had planned on driving to the next meeting but this will probably take me more than just a couple of weekends to finish. If anyone wants a writeup or pictures of anything I'm doing let me know. I had planned on swapping in my 88 cradle this go around but found the unplanned brake upgrade I would have to do to make it safe to drive would require more money and a new set of wheels  :(

front upper and lower ball joints
front inner and outer tie rods
rear lower ball joints
rear tie rods and ends
rear hubs
front wheel bearings
all poly bushings, end links etc.
engine/trans mounts
4 lowering springs
aluminum cradle bushings
shocks
struts
rear camber kit

also, flow matched pintle injectors (having idle problems with the 3.4ohv disc injectors)
new clutch kit and flywheel
all new hoses

At least I'll have a cradle to bolt the L32 to until that fateful day 5 years from now when I can afford the rest of the stuff I need for that swap  :-\

Tech Tips, Tech Questions / Coil over question
« on: May 06, 2016, 12:25:39 am »
So I'm getting my 85 SE put back together and I have a coil over question. I'm wanting to buy or build some coil overs and I'm currently using the 85 engine cradle. I have an 88 cradle and plan on doing a swap in the future- just not sure how far out it will be. Maybe a year? I'm curious if anything I put into coil overs on the pre-88 can be reused for the 88 cradle swap. If I'm going to have to scrap everything I'm going to have a hard time trying to justify the expense to make it work presently.

Gold or black lace wheels would be cool, not sure what other colors they came in. If you have good tires on them, even better. Going on a black 85 bumper pad V6.

Just priced out some tires to replace my 1993 Goodyear Eagle GT II's on the stock 6 inch rims- $700 installed? Time for different wheels. Always liked the lace ones.

Also looking for some used 84-87 rear coil overs, a pair of 88 rear knuckles, lateral links, and toe links.

Tech Tips, Tech Questions / Need some solid advice on rear collision repair
« on: November 28, 2015, 12:16:44 pm »
Hey everyone,

My car get hit in the rear awhile back and I'm just now getting around to really surveying the damage and looing into what it might take to fix it. It's an 85 SE. After pulling the bumper cover off it looks like the rear support and honeycomb took the bulk of the impact but my trunk is also dented in and there looks to be some damage (minor? I hope) the driver's side frame rail where the support bolts on. Also, although the bumper cover didn't tear it looks to have been deformed by the bent support underneath. Even after removing it from the car its misshapen.

First thing is I'll have to replace the support and honeycomb- can I pull this from any bumper pad notchback? Can the bumper cover be repaired or is this cover common enough it would be cheaper to just replace and paint? Is the frame horn and trunk damage a simple fix or should I leave this to a professional- any idea on what I should expect to pay someone to go this route?

The Market / Looking for 88 cradle
« on: March 20, 2015, 11:46:48 pm »
Hi everyone,

First post here. My 85se V6 has been out of commission for about a year and I've got some time coming up where I can get her put back together. Since I've got the cradle out I was thinking it would be a good time to look into upgrading to an 88 cradle.

I've located a couple out west and I'm considering pulling the trigger on buying one of them depending on what the freight charges look like tomorrow but I'd much rather get one locally if I can to avoid surprises and a bunch of shipping. Looking at the production numbers of 88 Fieros as a whole I wouldn't think these should be too hard to find but for all I know this is the holy grail of rare parts for these cars nowadays. If anyone has one or info on where I can find one (or that I'm lucky to find the one I found and should buy it) I'd be much obliged.

Also, I run the stock rims and need tires. Apparently the word from the big tire chains is the only company that makes tires in this size anymore wants $700 a set. Sounds pretty steep! I'm not ready to upgrade the wheels to a more modern size yet- any hints on a affordable "for now" set would be great. I had Kauffman tire check the date code on my current tires (Goodyear Eagle GT) and he says they are from 1993. That explains the fabulous 270 degree U turns I suppose  :-\
