Rear Brake Adjustment For 88
« on: November 01, 2021, 07:12:08 pm »
Who was looking for information on how to replace the rear pads on an 88?  I can't find the thread, but I found this while browsing through a manual.

5 Disconnect the parking brake cable from
the lever on the caliper (see illustration).
6 Once the cable is freed from the lever,
depress the spring by levering it with a
screwdriver (see illustration) and slide it off
the parking brake cable.
7 Holding the parking brake lever with a
screwdriver, remove the nut, the lever, the
lever seal and the anti-friction washer from
the caliper actuator screw (see illustration).
Note the relationship of these parts to one
another before taking them apart. Note:
While caliper removal does not require the
removal of these parts, it's a good idea to
inspect the lever seal and anti-friction washer
even if you are simply replacing the pads. If
either the seal or the washer is damaged or
worn, replace it.
8 Position a C-clamp over the inboard
surface of the caliper housing and the outboard surface of the mounting bracket (see
illustration). Make sure the C-clamp does
not contact the actuator screw. If you do not
have a C-clamp, use a large water pump pliers.5.6 Lever the spring away from the
parking brake lever and slide the spring
off the cable
Note: 1988 models require a special tool
to rotate the piston to the bottom.

That write-up seems to contradict itself.

It kind of does. If you're using a clamp, you don't need the tool.
(When I compressed mine, the shaft where the lever attaches rotated as the piston was pushed into the caliper. Seems like two different means to the same end.)

The instructions are for 84-87.  The note at the bottom requiring the tool is just for the 88, as I interpret it.  I may be missing something, though.
