Cork or rubber?
« on: August 30, 2020, 07:56:18 pm »
I’m doing some work on my ‘73 Mustang convertible and have to replace the valve cover gaskets. It has the 351 Cleveland. I can get either the cork or rubber gaskets just like for the 2.8. I am leaning to cork because I know that over time the rubber gaskets seem to get hard. Any thoughts?

If you can get Fel-pro blue silicone gaskets for that engine, that would be best.

Look for the ones with the metal inserts that keep you from over tightening. They are reusable if you have to take them off for any reason.

Love the 351 cleveland.... Had one in my 72 Torino.

I second the vote for Flepro silicone.

Scott, Mustangs were my first automotive love. My first car was a 73 Mach 1. I now own a 2003 Mach 1 and another 73 Mach 1 plus a 73 convertible. One of the Mach 1’s has the Q code engine and the convertible has an original ram air system. All of them need “a little work” to get them running. Plus my Fieros. It seems as if I have two mistresses - and a wife! Everything is high maintenance except my very understanding wife!
