Axle seals
« on: November 03, 2020, 05:19:10 pm »
Since I'm going to replace the axles, and I think one seal is leaking, I want to replace the axle seals.  Finding the seals is proving more difficult than expected.  The part shows, for several transmissions, then says it won't fit my transmission.

I may possibly have found a right side axle seal.

Here are the axle seals I got:

Hopefully, they're correct.  The passenger axle was possibly leaking, so this should be the right one.

They're red and green, so they must fit!   ;)

I would recommend a coating of gorilla snot (3m super weatherstrip adhesive) before installing. That will help to seal any potential leaks in the case. A hint is to get the adhesive cold before applying, makes it less stringy.

It may take me that long to get them installed.  If you can guarantee that the red and green seals, if installed next month, will guaranteed fit, I can guarantee it will be next month when they get installed.   :D

Good idea.

Lubricate the axle and rubber. This is what I used to use. When putting the metal clad seals in we used to use a yellow sealant... for the life of me I can’t remember the name. We just called it monkey snot but I know that’s not the name.

Lube the axle shaft?  Or just the rubber at the joints?

Shaft and rubber. Prevents Tears in the rubber. You can also just mix petroleum jelly and transmission fluid. Slick as ice.

I've always used 3m super weatherstrip adhesive........ FYI, monkey snot is used on piping systems in the US Navy

On the trip down there, I lost a quart of transmission fluid.  I knew it was leaking a bit at the right axle seal, and certainly, there were a few drops, from time to time.  When the axle seal comes out, I want to see why it was leaking.
