Maybe Harold Weeks on this forum might be interested in swapping out his duke engine and installing a V6.

The e-brake must be engaged for the trunk switch to open the decklid?  New one for me.

They sure do (are supposed to be).  My 87GT doesn't require it.  The 86SE does require the brake lever to be pulled up off the resting position.

Well, my trunk switch has always worked, on all my Fiero--including 2 stock Fieros.  It never occurred to my to set the e-brake, or to engage it in any way to facillitate electronic decklid release.  I wonder how this would work with keyless entry.  Actually, I'm curious about the reasoning on this, altogether.  There is no danger in releasing the front or rear compartments while moving.

Is there something that could fail, such that the e-brake woild no longer factor into electronic decklid release?

Is that just on manual cars maybe?  My 85gt does the same. The e brake has to be set to activate the trunk popper.

That's an astute observation, Ron.  For the record, all my Fieros have been automatics.  Such a "feature" would make more sense on a manual.

My trusty 87 service manual says for trunk release to work on a stick shift the parking brake must be applied and on the automatic the
gear shift must be in park.

Ok, so try this...
Somebody with an a/t, leave it in drive and try to pop the trunk and hope that combo doesn't activate the ejection seat. (That's how i lost my back seat).  Report back.

Ron, now you've exposed a long-held secret of Hulki's.  The 2+2 is the only one left.  They disabled the ejection seat feature on all prototypes until after they got the 'family car' concept past GM.

Hey, I'm somebody....

I can verify that my transmission had to be in Park for the trunk switch to release the decklid.

Afterward, I checked.  Sure enough, no rear seat.

BTW, I think the trunk switch doesn't work on the 2+2.

My 88 coupe (Duke, 5 speed) has a trunk popper that I added. (I had to add the switch, relay and solenoid, as usual.)
It works without the parking brake applied. Key off, in gear.

Hmmm.  Just saw this.  My understanding was that all Fieros had the wiring harness for the electric trunk popper.  Did you have to add any additional wiring, or just the items mentioned?

When I installed the remote release on my 88, I had to install the switch and relay and then pull a single wire through the decklid reinforcement ribs from the harness at the right hinge.  I don't remember where, but I obtained a short length of wire that had the same terminal on it as the existing harness, spliced and soldered it to the wire that I pulled through the decklid.  All the chassis harness was there.

Same as Charlie. Decklid needed an additional wire, from the connector at the hinge box, to the solenoid.
That's the only wiring that needs to be added. Otherwise, it's all there but the switch, relay and solenoid.

Same here, on my yellow car. And here's an easy way to get a wire through your deck lid. First, feed some 1/4" white plastic water line through the deck lid. (The kind of water line used to connect water to the back of  your refrigerator for the ice maker.) Then you can feed the wire through the water line  -- very easy. Then hold the wire at the other end, and pull out the plastic water line.
The more complex the mind, the greater the need for the simplicity of play.
