Wanted: 88 space frame. Back 1/3.
« on: January 16, 2021, 03:58:57 pm »
Now that I finally have a garage, I'm looking for the back portion of an 88 space frame. From the firewall back. Needs to include the firewall, hinge boxes, front and rear cradle mounting points, shock towers, and trunk wall. Hopefully, the trunk as well. I don't care about the battery box, as long as the structural metal is still there.
The only requirements are that the car is already completely disassembled, and that there is no structural rust. (Have sawzall will travel. :D )
Help with cutting and loading will be appreciated.

No judgment here.  With being at home, sitting down, and COVID, it's time to up-size.

Since both of mine are 88s, I'm just thinking that it would be cool to be able to build something on a cradle, and then slip an engine compartment over the assembly, and see what fits and what doesn't. Will be lots easier than fitting a cradle into a complete car, and then removing it again. That way, I'll be able to keep my cars running until I'm actually ready to do a swap.
It'll also work to mock up wiring harnesses, and such. (Not like I'm thinking about going into the harness business, or anything, but I am looking to do a 7730 in my 4.9 car.  I have some ideas in my head. But if it all actually works, I might consider doing something... useful?)

Would the '7730 be an improvement over whatever ECU/PCM you currently use?

Paul has The Warrior Project.  It wasn't that badly burned.  Confined to the engine compartment and deck lid.  It even left the portion of the lid and wing over the trunk intact.

As a whole unit, the car isn't salvageable at a reasonable cost.

It'd be awesome for that frame to find a good home.

What about Pats? He’s parting one out. I mean I was gonna ask for the cradle but I don’t have to have it.

I have a while 88 parts car, never burned in a fire. And I'd welcome a stripping and cutting party here to deal with it.

Would everything that wasn't taken go to the barn?

Cut the car midway, then when you're finished test fitting, reinstall the cradle and make a trailer by welding in a bottom in the engine bay.

TopNotch,

Does the 88 parts car you have still have a good title?  What is wrong with it mechanically?  Is that chassis restorable?  I spent a few moments crawling around it pulling the seats for NoMad and was impressed with its shape.

Before we go tearing up that chassis, my daughter is wanting to do a resto and drive a fiero as her 'second' car after a few years of driving my old suv around.  I have lots of parts (interior and engine) coming off my 88GT swap that could be used to bring it back to life.

Let me know your thoughts on this....

Good thought. I certainly don't want to cut up a "viable" rust free 88.
Too bad I don't still have the wrecked Formula that I parted out, back at the turn of the century. :D

Yes. Quite probably, in most ways.
