EMBLEMS & DECALS
FRONT BUMPER FIERO LOGO

The front bumper emblem was gold in 1984/85 and made of metal and plastic. In 1986 it was changed to silver and made entirely of plastic. The GT model had "Fiero GT" in the emblem. Nose emblems are no longer available from GM but can be found used on eBay from time to time. The Fiero Store (fierostore.com) carries new inserts for around $25. This requires that you have the base of the emblem in which to insert the new badge. Some "New Old Stock" (NOS) badges have been available from fierodave.com but supply is limited.
SAIL PANEL EMBLEM

The "arrowhead" emblem on sail panel frames is part number 20468876 but is difficult to locate via GM. They are still available from the Fiero Store (fierostore.com) for around $12 plus shipping.

If you are unable to find (or do not want to pay for) original emblems, there is an alternative that uses a slightly cheaper and newer version arrowhead emblem but requires some work as follows:

(1) Remove the old arrowhead emblem from the sail panel frame.

(2) Sand off the raised area which contained the old emblem until the surface is smooth.

(3) Repaint the sail panel frame (Plasti-Kote #616 Bumper Black).

(4) Install new peel-and-stick arrowhead emblem, GM Part No. 22591098. This part is $10.46 at gmpartsdirect as of April 2005. It is from a early '90s Pontiac Grand Am and looks better than the original emblem. It is only slightly larger than the original, about the size of the raised area on the sail panel.

REAR BUMPER "PONTIAC" EMBLEM

The "Pontiac" text on the rear fascia of some Fieros (part number 10055155) is no longer available but new emblems are now available from The Fiero Store (fierostore.com). If you do not want to replace the emblem, the mounting holes can be filled and painted. Alternative decals can be used to replace the original raised lettering.
Raised "Pontiac" lettering was used on late '80s and some early '90s Pontiacs (Grand Ams and Sunfire) but the size is different than the Fiero (some larger, some smaller). They are held in place with double-sided tape and do not have the locating protrusions on the back to fit holes in the bumper. It is possible to salvage these and apply them to the Fiero using new double-sided tape. However we do not know if the letters can be arranged to cover the holes in the Fiero bumper.

INDY PACE CAR WINGED EMBLEM

To replace the fender badge on the Indy pace car, go to your GM/Chevy dealer and have them look up P/N 88980647. That's the side badge for the 2004 Indy Impala SS. The badge is the same as a Fiero Indy with the exception there is no red stripe, but that can be added with a steady hand. The price was $69.00 in 2004.
ALTERNATIVE EMBLEMS

Small (about 5/8" high) metal "GT" emblems can be found on the interior front doors of late '80s Chevrolet Berettas. These typically come in red but occassionally in silver. Similar size "SE" emblems can be fround on late '80s Grand Ams, both in silver and red. Larger GT emblems (about 1.25" high) can be found on late '90s Pontiacs. The 1999 Grand Am had a small V-6 emblem on the front fender, part number 2265-8813. All of these emblems can be carefully removed and used on the Fiero.
DECK LID DECALS

Deck lid decals were used on all Fieros except the '86-88 GT to indicate the model. This included "Fiero Indy" in '84, "Fiero", "Fiero 2M4", "Fiero 2M6", and for 1985, "Fiero GT". Colors were typically silver (on a dark car) or Black/Dark Gray Metallic (on a light car). The Indy and GT decals also had a red pinstripe in some of the letters. We have seen some exceptions to this and suspect that dealers or owners may have used other colors. The silver typically fades after a few years and may appear gray or even white. Deck lid decals are no longer available from GM but can be found elsewhere on this web site.
DOOR & OTHER DECALS

Door decals were used only on the 1988 Formula ("FORMULA") and the 1984 Indy (pace car identification). Indy door decals were dealer-applied and some purchasers chose not to have them. The Indy also had a "PONTIAC" windshield decal and a dot-matrix "fade stripe" along the beltline of the car. With the exception of the "FORMULA" decal which was used on the Firebird, GM no longer has these decals. With the exception of the dot-matrix fade stripe, these decals can be found elsewhere on this web site. The fade stripe has been available from phoenixgraphix.com although you need to phone and request it separately.

ENGINE CONTROL MODULE
The Fiero Engine Control Module (ECM) was used in several GM cars besides the Fiero but the PROM (Programmable Read Only Memory) chip within the ECM is unique to the Fiero. If an ECM is salvaged from another vehicle and installed in a Fiero, be sure to install the correct Fiero PROM. The PROM is unique for each engine/transmission combination. A PROM from a Fiero V-6 with manual transmission will not work in a Fiero V-6 with automatic transmission. Also, a PROM may not swap between years even if the engine/transmission combination is the same.

The cars below have ECMs that will swap into the Fiero.

ENGINE, COMPLETE
A "complete" engine means cylinder block and heads. It does not include accessories such as alternator, water pump, A/C compressor, etc., although some of these parts from a donor engine may coincidentally fit the Fiero.

'84-86 Fiero 2.5L Engine: Is the same as:

Pontiac 6000       '84-86 2.5L VIN "R"
Chevy Celebrity    '84-86 2.5L VIN "R"
Buick Century      '84-86 2.5L VIN "R"
Olds Cutlass Ciera '84-86 2.5L VIN "R"
Chevrolet Citation '84    2.5L VIN "R"
Olds Omega         '84    2.5L VIN "R"
Pontiac Phoenix    '84    2.5L VIN "R"
Buick Skylark      '84-85 2.5L VIN "R"
'84-86 Fiero 2.5L Engine: The following engines can be used in a Fiero if injector and carburetor are switched, vacuum pump hole is covered, and distributors are changed. (These engines do not have the coil in the cap and they use a different distributor gear.)

Chevrolet Citation  '80-81 2.5L VIN "5"
Olds Omega          '80-81 2.5L VIN "5"
Pontiac Phoenix     '80-81 2.5L VIN "5"
Buick Skylark       '80-81 2.5L VIN "5"
'84-86 Fiero 2.5L Engine: The following engines can be used in a Fiero if the vacuum pump hole is covered.
Pontiac 6000         '82-83 2.5L VIN "R"
Chevrolet Celebrity  '82-83 2.5L VIN "R"
Buick Century        '82-83 2.5L VIN "R"
Olds Cutlass Ciera   '82-83 2.5L VIN "R"
Chevrolet Citation   '82-83 2.5L VIN "R"
Olds Omega           '82-83 2.5L VIN "R"
Pontiac Phoenix      '82-83 2.5L VIN "R"
Buick Skylark        '82-83 2.5L VIN "R"
'87 Fiero 2.5L   Engine: The following engines can be used in a Fiero except for the flywheel or flexplate. Change induction, exhaust, and electrical systems, pilot bushings as necessary. Will not interchange with '88 engines due to oil pan interference with frame.
Pontiac 6000        '87 2.5L VIN "R"
Chevrolet Celebrity '87 2.5L VIN "R"
Buick Century       '87 2.5L VIN "R"
Olds Cutlass Ciera  '87 2.5L VIN "R"
The following information was posted to Pennock's Fiero Forum by "Ray" from Houston, TX:

It is possible to get a better 2.5L engine for the '87-88 2.5L Fiero from a 1993 S-10. The 2.5L engine from the '93 S-10 should provide over 100 HP and considerably better mileage.

'88 Fiero 2.5L Engine: The following engines can be used in a Fiero except for the flywheel or flexplate. Change induction, exhaust, and electrical systems, pilot bushings as necessary. Will not interchange with '87 engines due to oil pan interference with frame.
Pontiac 6000        '88-89 2.5L VIN "R"
Chevrolet Celebrity '88-89 2.5L VIN "R"
Buick Century       '88-89 2.5L VIN "R"
Olds Cutlass Ciera  '88-89 2.5L VIN "R"
'85-88 Fiero 2.8L:   The 2.8L Fiero VIN "9" engines are unique. There are no other automobile engines EXACTLY like these that can be dropped into a Fiero. However, other engines will fit with minor modifications noted below.

The following engines can be used in the Fiero by changing the intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds, fuel delivery system, and removing the power steering brackets:

Pontiac 6000        '82-84 2.8L VIN "X" & VIN "Z"
Pontiac 6000        '85-86 2.8L Two-barrel carb VIN "X"
Chevrolet Celebrity '82-84 2.8L VIN "X"
Chevrolet Celebrity '85-86 2.8L Two-barrel carb VIN "X"
Buick Century       '82-86 2.8L VIN "X"
Olds Cutlass Ciera  '82-85 2.8L VIN "X"
Olds Cutlass Ciera  '86    2.8L Two-barrel carb VIN "X"
Chevrolet Citation  '82-84 2.8L VIN "X" & VIN "Z"
Olds Omega          '82-84 2.8L VIN "X" & VIN "Z"
Pontiac Phoenix     '82-83 2.8L VIN "X" & VIN "Z"
Buick Skylark       '82-84 2.8L VIN "X" & VIN "Z"
Buick Skylark       '85    2.8L Two-barrel carb VIN "X"
'85-88 Fiero 2.8L: The following engines can be used in the Fiero by changing the intake and exhaust manifolds and removing the power steering brackets:
Pontiac 6000         '85'-86 2.8L EFI, VIN "W"
Chevrolet Celebrity  '85'-86 2.8L EFI, VIN "W"
Olds Cutlass Ciera   '86     2.8L EFI, VIN "W"
Chevrolet Citation   '85     2.8L EFI, VIN "W"
Buick Skylark        '85     2.8L EFI, VIN "W"
'85-88 Fiero 2.8L: The following engines can be used in the Fiero by changing the intake and exhaust manifolds, drive belt system, and removing the power steering brackets:
Chevrolet Cavalier  '85-86 2.8L VIN "W"
Cadillac Cimarron   '85-86 2.8L VIN "W"
Olds Firenza        '85-86 2.8L VIN "W"
NOTE 1: A popular swap for the Fiero 2.8L engine is a 3.4L engine from a '93-95 Camaro or Firebird. This engine requires simple modifications that are beyond the scope of this manual. Other popular swaps are the Chevrolet Small Block V8 and the Cadillac 4.9L V8. For more information check v8archie.com and thefierofactory.com.

NOTE 2: New engine mounts are appropriate when replacing an engine. The 1988 mounts can be expensive. Robert Lachance advises that you can use the front engine mount from a early '90s Pontiac Transport 3.8 (non-supercharged) on a 1988 2.8L Fiero engine for about $100 less than the Fiero-specific mount from parts stores. No modification is required. We don't have the part number at this time but Robert reports the mount is available from GM dealers. If anyone can provide the part number, please let us know.

EVAPORATOR CORE
EVAPORATOR CORE:   Two air conditioner evaporator cores were used in the Fiero, one in '84 and one in all '85-88 Fieros. This evaporator core is unique and not used in other cars. As far as we have been able to determine, aftermarket units are no longer available and the best recourse is a used one. Fortunately they do not wear out often.

For the record, the '84 Fiero used GM Part No. 3054185 (AC Delco 15-6398). The '85-88 Fieros used GM Part No. 3090045 (AC Delco 15-6544 or Delphi EP1054). You may get lucky and find one under one of the above numbers.

EXHAUST MANIFOLD & EXHAUST PARTS
The exhaust manifolds in the 2.5L Fiero are found in several other GM cars but the manifolds in the 2.8L Fiero are unique. Unfortunately the 2.8L manifolds are prone to cracking and leakage. Repair by welding or replacement with used exhaust manifolds are the only options with a 2.8L engine (other than aftermarket performance headers or exhaust pipe modifications). If you are willing to make customized exhaust piping, manifolds from many 2.8/3.1/3.4 engine will bolt to the Fiero heads. Note that the Fiero manifolds are stainless steel.

That said, there is one set of cast iron exhaust manifolds that will bolt to the 2.8L Fiero which requires only minor modification to the downstream exhaust piping. These are the manifolds from the 1989/90 Grand Prix Turbo (Turbo ONLY). The Fiero Y-pipe requires bending to match the manifolds and this can be done using a vice and a 2" pipe for additional leverage. A benefit of using the Grand Prix manifolds is reduced noise in the cockpit.

A company called AM Autoparts (am-autoparts.com) lists a new manifold for the Fiero 2.5L engine for about $100 (March 2010) with free shipping.

Exhaust Manifold Bolts, 2.8L

We'll say it up front: Replacement bolts for the 2.8L exhaust manifold are available as Dorman Part No. 03411. It is a set of 10 studs with locking nuts for Ford V8s. Typically available at auto parts stores - ask for them by number.

FAN & FAN MOTOR
FAN & MOTOR:   Five different fan motors and four different fans were used in the Fiero during its lifetime and replacements for all of them are easily available. So many GM cars used the same fan and motor we are not taking the space to list them.

We understand that an aftermarket fan made by Spal Automotive will work well in the Fiero with slight modification. You must cut the four arms that hold the original fan and motor flush with the shroud so the Spal will fit. The fan is very well balanced, has a low power draw, and moves about twice as much air as the stock Fiero fan. The fan is a 16 inch Spal Model Number SPA30100231 and is available from Spal at www.spal-usa.com/html/spalhome.htm

Another fan reported to work well is Perma-Cool 19115, a 16-inch fan with aluminum blades that claims to move air at 2950 cubic feet per minute. The cost in 2009 was about $127 from Summit Racing (summitracing.com) and from JEGs (jegs.com).

We also understand that many 16" fans on newer vehicles can be modified to work on the Fiero and that doing so will provide benefits of higher fan efficiency and lower current draw.

FLYWHEEL
It is convention that a "flywheel" is used only in manual transmissions. A "flexplate" is used in automatic transmissions. Here we are concerned only with flywheels.

Flywheel Shims: If a flywheel is resurfaced flywheel shims are required to move the face of the flywheel back to it's original location or the clutch will not engage properly. Flywheel shims are available from most auto parts stores. The following "off-the-shelf" shims are also available:

Flywheel Shims, 2.8L     '85-88    0.025"    Clutch-In 15260
Flywheel Shims, 2.8L     '85-88    0.050"    Clutch-In 15261

FRAME
FRAME '84-88:   The space frame on the Fiero will swap among all years. However the front and rear suspension systems are different on the '88 Fiero and not conducive to easy swaps to earlier years. No other vehicle used the Fiero frame so replacement of damaged parts must be from a donor Fiero.

FRONT GRILL
FRONT GRILL:   The '84-86 Fieros have a front grill which is unique. Replacements must come from donor vehicles.

FUEL PUMP
The 2.5L Fiero uses an in-tank electric fuel pump which has a working pressure of about 10 psi. The 2.8L Fiero has a similar pump with a working pressure of about 40 psi. There are many GM cars which use similar pumps. Since it is tedious to replace an in-tank pump, we suggest using new rather than used. New pumps are available at auto parts stores and we strongly suggest you purchase only AC Delco brand.

HARMONIC BALANCER
Harmonic Balancer: The harmonic balancer for the V-6 has been discontinued by GM but part number 14085401 will fit if the timing marks from your old harmonic balancer are transferred carefully to the new one. Don't try to use the timing marks on the new balancer; they are 60 degrees off!

We have no information on harmonic balancers for the 4 cylinder Fiero other than the aftermarket version shown below. Since so many 4 cylinder engines were used on other cars the balancers are probably still available from GM. It is also reasonable to assume that if an engine will swap into a Fiero (see the "Engine" section), so will the harmonic balancer from that engine.

A harmonic balancer for the 2.8L V6 (or any engine) can be obtained from the Damper Doctor, http://damperdoctor.com/. Their dampers are rebuilt with new parts where needed and the timing mark correctly placed. Quality is reported to be excellent. The cost is around $71 plus shipping.

Some aftermarket balancers for the Fiero are shown below.

Harmonic Balancer, 2.5L, '87-88 Dorman 594-027
Harmonic Balancer, 2.8L, '85-87 Dorman 594-013
Harmonic Balancer, 2.8L, '88    Dorman 594-008

And these:

From Auto Zone for Fiero V6 (in 2002):
Pioneer DA-1731 (replaces OE# 14083394) 73.99
Pioneer DA-1733 (replaces OE# 14085401) 67.99

1 year warranty on them. Auto Zone only sells new balancers.

Headlight Adjusting Screw
The headlight adjusting screw doesn't warrant much attention, but if you have tried to adjust a rusty screw you might appreciate that you can get a replacement at your local auto parts store. It is Help! 42161 and will fit all Fieros.

HEADLIGHT MOTORS, RELAY, SWITCH
HEADLIGHT MOTORS '84-86: Headlight motors in '84-86 Fieros are notorious for failure which is not surprising considering their age and lack of maintenance. Replacements are available from GM but are expensive. Used and rebuilt motors are frequently sold on eBay.

Headlight motors in the '82-86 Firebird are the same as the '84-86 Fiero although they must swap sides to fit the Fiero.

The '84-86 Fiero headlight motors can use the brush assembly from Cadillac antenna motors ('91-'93 work, maybe other years), but the single "down" wire will need the Fiero connector spliced on. Most junkyards have the antenna motors and the brush assemblies are usually in good shape. When a Cadillac antenna motor fails it is usually the plastic drive cable.

Headlight motor repairs are simple for the shade tree mechanic and parts are available from the vendors listed below.

Headlight Motors'87-88:   Headlight motors on the '87-88 Fiero have an improved design compared to the earlier years but still fail due to age. Replacements are available from GM but are expensive. Used and rebuilt motors are frequently sold on eBay. Repairs are simple, more so than earlier years. We understand that headlight motors from the following cars will fit the '87-88 Fiero:

- Buick Reatta (all years - may require different control module; see below)
- 1986-89 Pontiac Sunbird*
- 1988-96 Corvette
- 1987-92 Firebird (must swap sides to fit Fiero)
- 1988-02 Lotus Esprit
- 1988-04 Lotus Elan (most)
- 1990-92 Toranado Trofeo (may require different control module; see below)

*Not all Sunbird motors from these years will swap. On some, the mounting holes on the Sunbird motors do not aline with the mounting holes in the Fiero headlight buckets on either side. Our thanks to Jim Moreland for this nugget.

Headlight Control Modules: The headlights in the '87-88 Fiero are controlled by an electronic module found beneath the left front fender behind the fender well. The module (part no. 16523917) was used on the following cars:

'97-04 Corvette
'87-89 Firebird
'86-89 Pontiac Sunbird
'86-89 Buick Skyhawk

In April of 2010 new replacement modules were still available from gmpartsdirect.com for about $175 plus shipping. This makes a salvaged unit pretty attractive!

An identical looking module (part no. 16525685) was used on the '90-94 Sunbird, '90-02 Firebird, '90-92 Olds Toronado/Trofeo and '90-92 Buick Reatta. That module will NOT interchange with the Fiero.

Headlight Relay, '84-86: This relay is still available from GM (part number 22059694) but can be replaced by the GM power antenna relay (part number 12337964) which can be found in any salvage yard.

Parts to repair '87-88 headlight motors are available from the vendors listed above.

On-line articles to assist with do-it-yourself repair are at:

http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Garage/5007/fiero_osg/headlights.html
http://www.fierosails.com/headlights.html

Headlight Switch, '84-86: The headlight switch is a frequent culprit when problems occur with the headlight system. The switch is Wells SW235, typically available at auto parts stores for around $14. It can also be obtained from GM.

HEATER CORE
HEATER CORE:   Two heater cores were used in the Fiero, one for cars with air conditioning, another for cars without. See photo below. The core size is the same for all years but for cars with A/C the inlet/outlet pipes on the heater core are longer and offset. The heater cores are unique and not used in other vehicles so the only source for salvaged units is another Fiero. Aftermarket units are readily available from chain auto parts stores such as AutoZone, Rock Auto, etc., as well as places such as Auto Radiator Outlet at 800-252-0333. The AC Delco heater core part number for an '84-88 Fiero with A/C is 15-60038.

A company called Ready-Aire (factory is in Mexico) makes a replacement heater core for Fieros with A/C that works fine. We have used it successfully in our two Fieros. This particular core is stocked by several companies under their specific part number as follows:
Ready-Aire      398203
Fedco            2-469
NAPA              3310
Four Seasons     94498
Everco            6201
Stant            90203
Murray          279157
As of 12/10/08 we found the heater core at rockauto.com for $45.89 using the Four Seasons part number 94498. We also found it at advanceauto.com for $46.99 and at autozone.com for $41.99 under the Ready-Aire number 398203.

If the heater core cannot be replaced it usually can be repaired by a competent radiator shop.

When removing a leaky heater core the hoses will often be bonded to the inlet and outlet pipes making it very difficult to remove the hoses without damaging them. Since the heater core will be replaced anyway, we suggest you use pliers, Vise Grips, etc., to squeeze the hoses at the inlet/outlet pipes, thus crushing the pipes beneath the hose and breaking the bond. You may need to crush the hose at 90 degree positions to be effective. Avoid the use of serrated jaws to protect the hoses from damage, or wrap serrated jaws with duct tape, etc., to relieve any sharp edges. With the inlet/outlet pipes crushed, removing the hoses without damaging them is a lot easier.

If you plan to replace the heater hoses also, then the fast way to remove the heater core is to cut the hoses near the inlet/outlet pipes. Just make sure you have replacement hoses in hand before you cut the hoses!

HOOD & DECK VENTS
HOOD VENTS: Hood vents are not a stock item on the Fiero but many owners like to add them to their cars. Late '80s Turbo Pontiac Sunbirds have vents that look nice on a Fiero and they let air escape from under the hood.

DECK LID VENTS: Another popular addition to the Fiero is a deck lid vent. The hood scoop from a 1999 Mustang looks good and is frequently used for this purpose. Below are a couple of sources for scoops:

http:www.brothersperformance.com/shop/mustang/hood-scoop.html

Other aftermarket scoops can be found via an Internet search.
