1984 I4 -> 1986 V6?
« on: June 03, 2009, 10:46:07 am »
As posted previously I recently got my hands on another '84 with no engine or trans and am currently debating on options to replace those. My most recent idea has been to use a 4-speed trans and 2.8 from an '86 SE in a nearby junkyard, does anyone know if the wiring harness would need to be modified for such a swap or if I can just put the computer and wiring from the other car straight in? The '84 was an automatic.

Wiring is completely different on the '84s. You'll need all of the wiring from under the hood on a later model swap, & maybe even more...

I can get the harness, hell Ill probably just pull that whole car from the junkyard and strip it down if I can.

There's a lot of things different on the 84.  The AC, the cruise, the wiper motor, the headlights, the cradle, the shifter cables, and that's all I can think of at the moment.
There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

Yeah, that's your best bet, or even better put all the good parts on the '86...
