General Fiero Discussion / Re: Center Console Skeletons
« on: July 28, 2014, 01:55:00 pm »
This looks like it could definitely be useful for anyone in need of replacing the frail/cracked/broken center console bracket. I'm interested to know what you would charge for one of those? You mentioned that you could do one with a double DIN option. Could you do one with the double DIN radio and HVAC controls reversed. I had done a custom double DIN radio install last year and swapped the position of the radio and HVAC controls and liked that set up so much more. Unfortunately last August someone broke into my car and stole the radio. I tried to install it so it couldn't be easily stolen and I'm sure that was the case because the thief ended up destroying much of my dash to get the radio over the shifter to pull it out. I have since put the factory radio back in with the HVAC controls just resting on top of the radio because all the inside brackets are destroyed. I could use another console skeleton but if I could get one already set up the way I want it that would make life so much easier. I never got the trim plate finished before the radio was stolen but I would like to try and finish this project someday. Here is the link to my original post.  8)

I’m sure I’m a bit late in throwing in my 2 cents. I have an 87 GT with a full polly install from control arms, sway bars, sway bar links, engine cradle, engine mounts and transmission mounts. I even have the polly covers over the ball joints. I love the firmer ride and noticed the difference immediately after installing them. It can be a bit creaky going over speed bumps and backing out of my driveway but I think it’s a good way to go. I did have to burn all of my bushings out. Burning them out isn’t too bad. You would pretty much need a blow torch, flathead screwdriver and a hammer. The hardest part about the whole project for me was getting the front springs back on. There really isn’t a lot of space to work with using the spring compression tool and the tool always seemed to be in the way of something when fitting the spring back in. I did a video on replacing bushings but it’s sitting on my computer waiting to be put together along with a bunch of other videos. However I found the video below does a great job at showing how it’s done.

I made a video on removing a Fiero engine using basic tools you'd find around your garage with the exception of the engine hoist. I even used two 4 wheel movers dollies from Harbor Freight in this video to hold the craddle because my custom built engine dolly was being used on another project. If you're looking for a visual guide this might help some. I can get an engine out of a Fiero in a little over 3 hours.

For some reason I can't figure out how to embed videos so here is the YouTube link. 8)

The Market / Re: Assorted Fiero Parts For Sale

I'm a little broke at the moment but when I can scrape some cash together I'd be looking for a steering column for an automatic with cruise control and tilt steering. My tilt steering is loose and I spent $250 last May to have a shop tighten it down with some lock tight only to have them tell me that the bearings must be bad inside because they can't get it to stop moving around. Let me know a price + shipping and I'll let you know.

So I've gone through a couple fill-ups since doing this ECM swap and the results are in. I did not factor in the fill up after the autocross as that wouldn't be an accurate assessment. OK, I have a short commute to work every day and the driving style would be more towards city with a somewhat heavy foot on the gas so I could improve my mpg slightly if I wanted to but...it's a fun car to drive and I like to have a little fun. When the car had the 2.8 engine with 184,000 miles I was averaging about 16.5 mpg and never broke over 21 mpg highway...ever. When I dropped the 3.4 engine into the car last year my mpg actually went up to an average of about 17.5 mpg and over 22 mpg highway. Maybe the engine didn't have to work as hard to move the car along or maybe the tired ol' 2.8 with the high miles was just not as efficient as it could have been. Regardless I actually did get 1 whole mpg improvement with the bigger engine. Now after the 7730 swap I've been averaging 18.3 mpg. Almost 1 more mpg improvement in the exact same driving style and the exact same route I take every day. There is definitely a noticeable improvement in the cars efficiency. I haven't done any highway driving yet so I'm not going to state any numbers there. When I do, I will post them.
Just for kicks are a few pics of my autocross for anyone that can't watch the video

I was going through my pics and just happen to come across a random pic my GoPro HD  took at the autocross which happens to show the radio installed and in primer gray but it also shows what the passenger side ashtray looks like when the iPod is unplugged, the wires tucked in and the lid closed. A nice clean stock look. The drivers side just so happens to be flipped open though. I forgot to take a picture without the iPod so this works out.
