The Market / 1985 Pontiac Fiero GT
« on: March 14, 2015, 12:25:39 pm »
Happy to say that I am putting up the MetalBlue85GT for sale. Maybe this will lead to my Fiero to be continued.

If interested txt or call - Four O Four 8 Six Three 2 1 O O - Randy

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/cto/4931740607.html

Reason for sale:
The car was bought for my 15 year old son in 2013 we worked on it for about a year and just after we got about 8 hours into his permit driving; he was in a different car and was in a bad car accident. He now says this car is too aggressive and is driving my truck instead. I have another car so this is now extra.

If It sells before next weekend (not likely)  I will be counted out of the St. Patrick's day parade.

cheers

Good morning,

I wanted to let the club know that I am moving the parts car (1986 SE RED) to Ron's  custody with the Title and all of the parts. I collected Zero money from anyone buying parts. Only a few people took parts form the car. I did not purchase the tail lights as I had bid in the Forum so they are still in the car. ( since I will be selling the metal Blue 85 GT )

The Honor system was used and donations should have been posted through PayPal.

Today at 1PM I am meeting Ron at his house in Powder Springs to drop the car off.

- There is a set of 4 Red jack stands which I obtained form when we picked up the Donor cars in TN that will be left with this car.
- I still have ramps and Air-tools from Charlie that I need to get back to him. I will keep those until we can meet up.
- There are 3 rims loosely loaded with this car and I believe two in the rear are Rays Tires and wheels.

I am sorry this process didn't go as planned; I was happy to donate my garage and helping taking apart the car.
- I hope it can generate more for the club in the future.

Happy New Year

Randy

Tech Tips, Tech Questions / 85 GT Auto - ECM conversation
« on: September 28, 2014, 09:09:18 pm »
85 GT 3spd Auto.

I have this: Shutter, Jitter, spudder, during cruising when the TCC locks just as I hold the throttle not accelerating not slowing.

Here is what I know:

- New fuel pump no help ( fixed my stalling after an hour though)
- new plug wires didn't help
- putting the old ones back in didn't either
- New coils no help
- old coil back in no help
- New plugs no help, new plugs again no help.
- new distributer no help (found old distributor had cracked Magnet and couldn't find jut the magnet)
- new ICM no help
- other old ICM no help
- TCC recently changed (was stalling - fixed that but no help to this)
- Transmission fluid flush no help

So in talking to Charlie, I borrowed the 86SE Computer (auto trans too) and installed it. right off the bat I got a Check engine light (34 map sensor). The Acceleration was not correct either. It was shifting really slow and taking too long to shift to 2nd (with low power). But I did not get the jitter, shutter, spudder that I was getting I think.

So the question is should I even mess with this 86 SE computer is there something so different with it controlling my 3 speed verses what I think is a four speed Auto?

Tech Tips, Tech Questions / 85 GT jitters
« on: July 15, 2014, 09:35:38 pm »
So I have this jitter in the car when I am at constant speed it is like the car is missing. I have changed: distributor, cap rotor, the ECM 2x so I have 3 good ones. the spark plugs, wires and coil. It is the last mechanical thing I need to fix on this car so I can claim victory and start looking for my own.

Since the above I went back to the old Coil and spark plug wires. a slight change but is it still doing it. I am going to probably swap all the spark plugs out.

Any other Ideas?

Club News / Offering - 84/85 Fiero Silver
« on: March 17, 2014, 09:55:00 pm »
So I have noticed that there was a Silver fiero near  a pep boys in Acworth. When I asked the shop about it they assumed since it had been there since Aug that it was abandoned and they were towing this weekend so I queried and they gave me the owners phone to try him.

The owner is Bob, he bought the car for his grandson and now his grandson doesn't want it. He took it to pep boys and they said they don't work on cars that old. So now this guy just wants to get his money out of it and I saw an opportunity to get cheap parts for the donor project.

He gave up his cards and left me a message about 500 dollars he has into it. Is there any interest in getting this car? I will get it for as little as I can.

I am going to go look at it closer and I will get pics and the VIN. Duke is possibly blown - it is a Manual, depending on whether it is an 84 or 85 I may want it as a project car if the club doesn't want to pull money together to start.

The car has Bumpers and a Luggage rack no Sun roof, and interior was fair.

More to come.

General Fiero Discussion / TCC issue after R&R of the solenoid
« on: March 08, 2014, 11:20:46 am »
I am going back in for another TCC Solenoid R&R and trying to locate a retail 3rd gear switch too. no one seems to carry these.

Here is the symptom:
- R&R TCC for the locking issue and that fixed the locking issue. Then after I installed the new TCC Sole I get a chugging of the car when I am above 35mph; cruise on flat ground. Once I accelerate or tap the brake or remove the TCC wires the chugging stops. So I know it has something to do with TCC.

So far:

Fluid exchange and filter replacement have not helped.

Anyone know of a good transmission shop for parts?
If I R&R the TCC Sole and the 3rd gear switch and it doesn't fix the problem: Anyone recommend a Transmission shop to rebuild this Automatic?

I bought my TCC Sole from Advanced Auto maybe that wasn't a good idea?

I have looked for some detail behind the purpose of the 3rd gear switch.

Does the following apply to our Transmission?

The 3rd clutch pressure switch is wired in series with the TCC lock up solenoid. The 3rd clutch pressure switch is closed by the fluid pressure from the 3rd clutch fluid to complete the circuit for TCC lock up.

General Fiero Discussion / AT Transmission bolts Torque
« on: February 16, 2014, 01:42:46 pm »
Anyone have the Torque value for these bolts? The packaging said 12 foot lbs. seems a little low. I could not find the torque in the manual.

General Fiero Discussion / TCC again - Different symptom
« on: February 14, 2014, 09:56:12 am »
Here we go again.......

So to the new subtle symptom that appeared at 35+mph prior to changing out the pump on a test run last week, really shows up at 65 mph after the pump change - but I am sure they have nothing in common with changing the pump.

- when I was at cruise and seemed the TCC was trying to lock in, the car jerks like I was rapidly pushing and releasing the gas pedal.
     - So I pulled off the highway and pulled the TCC wire and started to drive again it stopped.

If you recall I just R&R'd the TCC solenoid.

My plan and I am taking suggestions:

I am going to go check fluid (would like to find a Mechanic who can do the filter and fluid that knows what they are doing on a Fiero so I can learn)

I assume if it is anything different than the solenoid then I am going to get a transmission expert.

I just read through OGREs Site just to brush up on it. I am going to my manual next just to see what that says.

Has anyone had this type of symptom?

General Fiero Discussion / Crash test video

I just wanted to share what I found when looking at videos of removing the Fuel tanks.

Sad to see it crushed, but cool to see its survivability.

The Market / Distributor parst needed
« on: January 26, 2014, 04:02:03 pm »
EDIT - Bought a new distributor. Will be donating usable parts from the Core to the Donor Car.

Hello, I have been quiet here for a while but I have still been visiting and reading. I have missed a lot of the Fiero meetings since joining. I am still trying to find that last bug in my system.

If you read here you will see what problems I have STILL since the first time I drove the Fiero to the Club meeting and what I have done so far.
http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/131555.html#p8

What I am looking for is a good distributor or just the piece I need which is the magnet. (look for picks in the Pennocks post..

Anyone have something like that they are looking to sell before I go buy a new Distributor for broken magnets.

I hope all is well. look forward to getting that Fiero up and running so I can come join the fun.

Tech Tips, Tech Questions / Headliner refinish
« on: May 04, 2013, 01:41:21 pm »
I know writing about it isnt as cool as the pictures but the rain has me trapped at the computer today and completed it the last sunday in April.

Followed this link: http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/092122.html as a guide to execute.

My tools:
Brand new razor blades.

But I will add my own stumbles and recoveries:

Everything was easy as described in the link however when i removed the front door trim for my first time it didnt not come out that easy as noted in the link.
- There are three attachments to the car from the trim, There is a 2 inch tab in the top rear, and two brittle peices that are down the window that if not slid down or up and out they will break.
- First you have to pull down and out at the rear top of the trim, this is the two inch tab that is held in place by two clips that squeeze the tab to hold it in place. if you use too much force  you will break off the tab like I did. I super glued it back in place and expanded the clip a little with a screw driver to put it back on the install and that worked.
- Then you either slide down or up and away to get the rest of the trim unhooked. I didnt and they both broke. I was able to get it in and tight with only one half of a tab left so I am going with that - I couldnt find replacements on the store and if I pull it apart the glued tab will break.

As every where you read that headliner is brittle spongey fiber glass like wafers too it is layered and the thin spots and the corners came apart.
- I used gray padded fabric from Joanns and bought the adhesive from Joanns (dont -use anything but the 3M trim adhesive) it didnt work at all. I got lucky that it didnt the first time - then I went to advanced and bought a big can of the 3M trim that was execellent stuff. That being said - when they say take your time and dont stretch. follow it.
- I sprayed both the liner and the foam, let it sit 1-3 minutes and let it roll on to the trim slowly. it was raining outside and about 74 degrees. and that stuff locked in tight with minor pressure. I did about 1-2 feet at a time, I have a sun roof so i moved from front to rear not side to side on the headliner.
- My only mistake in the end was the last lay out I dropped the end before I rolled the rest and I got a little bit of a bunch up at the rear basically two 2 inch creases over the passengers head - hardly noticable but I see it of course.

Prepping the headliner - I bought a sponge sander from Advanced and hit the headliner with that and it prepped it really nice with only a light pressure - My old foam didnt come of so clean so I had a lot of pinching to get the rest off and then sanded the rest. I also used Duct tape to strengthen the cracked places and the weak areas per the link - that worked well (but the humidity started to let the tape go so i added 3M adhesive to the tape and that solved that.)

My take - It took me most of the day but I was reading and planning as I went and i did the fabric run in the middle of the day after the headliner was all prepped for fabric. 3.5 by 4 feet is plenty, There was a peice cut at Joanns aready - 4 by 3ft 9 in and I cut better then 6 inches all around as I trimmed it for glueing to the back side of the headliner.
- for the outside I rolled the trim about 1.5 inches over the top with the glue, and then I cut off the excess 6 inches.
- for the sunroof trim, I left 3+ inches and cut slits at the corners to allow for the fabric make the turns, I used a little rubber mallot to push the trim back in fo rthe sunroof. If I was redoing it, I would boil the trim to heat it up or use a heat gun and then dry and tap it in because my corners did not go in as good as I thought and from the bottom they didnt seat well in the corners. since i dont ahve a heat gun I will wait until summer and tap the rest of the way in when they are super hot from the sun.

I will get some pics of the finished project. on here soon.

General Fiero Discussion / New Symptom - On way home from Club meeting
« on: April 14, 2013, 12:51:02 pm »
Car - 85 GT 2.8 stock Automatic. no known engine mods.
- I have not replaced anything in the ignition system.
- i have not checked timing yet.
- this is the first time this has acted this way in 500 miles since I bought it.
- Only engine work was to put the EGR system back to stock (uncapped it).

After good food and good company ~ my son and I started off for the forty mile drive home. In stop and go for about 20 minutes speed started to pick up and we were cruising about 60. as i accelerated slowly the car would start to stall and then fire back up and run fine; when I woudl settle in to cruise again and accelerate it woudl load up stall and fire back up and act fine.

So here is where I started my troubleshooting: I was @ cruise about 60mph, pushed deeper into the pedal this time it full an stalled and then backfired when it lit back up. Once it recovers from teh stall it is normal with all the power and response. But once i keep a steady pedal for a short time and accelerate it does this. Once I was off the free way i tried it at cruise at 35 - same results - 45 same results.

I have it parked in the garage at this time and I am thinking I am goint o take it on a local ride to see if it is still there after a cool down as start up again.

After I hear back from you fine fiero owners I will decside where to begin.

Timing, Plugs, wires, cap, rotor.

What are your preferences on Plugs. Mine in my boat are iridium - I was thinking the same due to the higher RPMs of the 2.8 Auto on the freeway.
