General Fiero Discussion / Wrecked it
« on: July 29, 2023, 09:40:56 am »
Last Thursday my GF Janice burned herself while trying to light a fire in a fire pit. I went to the store in my yellow Fiero to get something she requested for that, and while on the way to her house, I hit a parked car on her street. It was night, and the car was black, and I just didn't see it (and I was hurrying). The right front wheel is now pointing in the wrong direction, and the car is not drive-able. I will post a picture later. It turns out that the car I hit (a 2002 Nissan) had an expired tag, and was therefore parked illegally.(You can't park an unregistered car on the street.) So the cop that showed up did not give me a citation, just his business card.

The problem is with my 88 duke powered t-top car. It started when I tried to drive it after it has sat a while. The clutch was very soft, and I couldn't get it into gear. The fluid in the master was low. So I topped it off, pumped the clutch a while, and it got firm and I was able to drive it. The problem has gotten worse over time, and today when I wanted to drive it, no amount of pumping would make the clutch work well enough to drive the car. The slave is a Rodney Dickman slave with dual seal piston, but it is several years old. Since his are made of aluminum, not steel or iron, I've always wondered if they would "wear out' over time. In any case, is there an easy way to tell which is bad -- the slave or master?

Club News / The Parts Barn is on a diet
« on: March 14, 2023, 11:25:33 am »
I have rented a dumpster, and am cleaning out the parts barn. Anything that I figure is really necessary to keep will be placed in a smaller shed on my property. If you want to see what's going out, or even want to help me clean the barn, pleas show up some time this week, or early next week. I get to keep the dumpster 10 days, or they will charge extra.

General Discussion / Jonathon David Jenkins
« on: February 06, 2023, 08:07:12 pm »
In case you don't know who that name belongs to, it's my stepson, my late wife Linda's son. He inherited a condition from his father called Cardio Myopathy. His father died from it when Jonathon was only 12 years old.
Had it been an earlier year, it may have now been time for Jonathon to also fall victim to the disease, but the good Lord had other plans. Last Wednesday he received a heart transplant at the UAB hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. Thanks to modern medical technology and the sacrifice of a family whose loved one perished, Jonathon has a new lease on life.
Jonathon is growing stronger every day. He even joked about going to fire school to be re-certified as a fire fighter (his old job years ago). Please remember him in your prayers as he begins this new phase of his life.

This is part of route 97 in upstate NY. If those folks up there don't have a RFTH, they need to.

General Fiero Discussion / My Fiero Adventures
« on: September 04, 2022, 04:43:35 pm »
The other day I was driving a neighbor around in my white Fiero when I heard a "thunk", and suddenly my volt meter went down. Turns out that my low mount alternator bracket had broken again -- the home welding fix wasn't good enough. This time I wasn't very far from home, so I took a chance and drove home. It was just starting to spew coolant when I got there. I contacted Fiero Rog and asked him to rush me another bracket. He said he could rush one, but it wouldn't be painted. That was Ok with me.
So now I'm down to one Fiero, and a friend in NC had just bought a house and was having a house warming party Friday evening. So I hop in my yellow Fiero and get there without incident. Yesterday I'm on my way back home when, at about 37 miles before the GA border on I-85, my car becomes almost uncontrollable. Luckily there weren't any cars near me, because I was zig-zagging down the highway. I managed to get it to the side and then slowly crept to the next exit, about a mile away. This car is an 88, which as you may know has a trailing arm suspension in the rear. The trailing arm and two lateral arms are connected to the knuckle with bushings. As near as I can tell, one of the lateral bushings on the passenger side completely disintegrated. I was a little more than 100 miles from home at that point, and was able get a tow home, with AAA paying for the 100 miles and me paying for the rest.
Meanwhile my new bracket came in yesterday, so today I put my white Fiero back together.
Had there been other cars around me yesterday, it could have been the end.

The Market / Submersible fuel hose
« on: August 30, 2022, 06:02:06 pm »
I have plenty of submersible fuel hose for anyone changing their fuel pump. As an incentive to get you to come to the meetings. I'll give a piece big enough to do the job to anyone who needs one, who comes to a meeting.

Tech Tips, Tech Questions / A Substitute for Submersible Fuel Hose
« on: August 20, 2022, 01:22:47 pm »
I had to change the fuel pump in my white Fiero (again, sigh), and I couldn't find any submersible fuel hose anywhere. I tried 3 Napa stores, including the big one on Peachtree Industrial. No luck. So I decided to find a substitute.
I went to Ace Hardware where they sell various bulk hoses by the foot. And I saw some polyethylene high pressure air hose of the right diameter. Since plastic gas cans are made of polyethylene, and gas doesn't harm them, I figures that the polyethylene hose should work, so I bought a foot. As a test, I cut off a small piece and put it in a small container of gasoline. It's still soaking there, and so far, no damage at all.
So I cut off a piece and used it to connect the pump to the metal line. And this time, I fixed the gas gauge sender, by removing the connectors and soldering the wires to the appropriate tabs. One of the connectors wasn't making contact.
Now I'm in the process of putting the tank back in the car. We'll see what happens.

General Fiero Discussion / May need help some day
« on: July 02, 2022, 02:31:24 pm »
The fuel pump on my white Fiero started making a bad noise. (It's the one that was in the car when I got it, and I have no idea how old it is.)
But my tank is full, so I'm going to have to keep driving it. So I may need to be rescued some day.
