The manual gearbox is the theft deterrent against millenials.
You can't fix stupid but, you can adjust it with a 2x4.

And if they manage to get past that, the Fiero E-brake is the backup anti-theft device.
There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

How?  It doesn't stop the Fiero, or prevent it from starting.

Even many mechanics don't know how to disengage it.  If it's set, even if the car is driven away, the brakes will soon begin to smoke.

Well, someone drove my Fiero more than 20 miles with the e-brake on.

My brothers, Ray and Royce each drove my first 85 about 15 miles and smoked the rotors and pads, rather than calling to find out how to release the brake.

I wonder if '88 rotors are different.  The e-brake shouldn't be.

Usually, there is a chime.

No one explained the Fiero e-brake to me.

I have never been in the habit of using the e-brake unless the car is running while I'm out of it and it's on an incline.  I don't know how I learned about its operation.  Could have been from my VW experience.  I think the Beetles operated the same way.

I didn't really much care about the e-brake, until I discovered that my coupe's Duke doesn't have enough compression to hold it still, on my driveway. (Still measured out at 140+, so I don't get it. But whatever.)

Those key fobs are pretty neat.  I see they have tshirts with the same graphics.
