Have you tried this?
« on: March 28, 2019, 06:13:50 pm »
Several questions:
1. Is it legal to take a car to multiple places for an inspection, just to see what happens?
2. Does a car have to have an engine installed/running to pass inspection?  As in, if it passed, but the engine was removed and the vehicle was brought back, could it still pass?

A friend came up with the idea of taking his roller Fiero to as many inspection stations as possible, just to see what would happen.

Around here, Fieros are all exempt from smog inspection, and there isn't any other kind.
The more complex the mind, the greater the need for the simplicity of play.

Hmmm.  I have to pass safety inspection, and all the emissions controls must be in place.  There cannot be any leaks.

Would this be legal?

Well, it is not illegal.  If you take a vehicle in for an inspection without an engine, they will take your money, but you will fail safety and emissions.  If you take it 2 more places and fail, the state will fine you.  Actually, you get investigated.  Apparently, a bunch of failed emissions tests throws up a red flag, almost instantly.

If your vehicle has no engine, it fails many things, like steering, throttle, brakes, etc.  9 items fail, I believe.

Next time I take my truck in, I think I'll remove the power steering.
