Sure, but some voices lend themselves to certain songs.
Old Man River, for example, is a great song. I like listening to it, and can sing it. No white person should sing that song in public. Not only does it never sound right, it just isn't believable.
A friend of my kid sister's was going to sing a particular song for American Idol. She chose the wrong song. I had suggested a different song, but she didn't sing it. After she was eliminated, she sang the song I requested, and was asked back. Ultimately, she was still eliminated, but because life decisions had damaged her vocal abilities.
There are songs I like to sing, but they do not fit my voice range. I can strain up to a C5, or get down to an A3. If I have a cold, down to an F#2. For some reason, people frequently try to get me to sing Elton John songs. He has a range of about 5 octaves, I think, but I think of him as a tenor. I'm a bass. No one seems to understand this. Does anyone really want to hear a bass sing "Tiny Dancer"? For those who don't know, think Johnny Cash, or songs like "16 Tons".
Some people don't have the lungs to sing certain songs. I am not large, but am missing the top of 1 lung, so breathing has always been an issue. Take Elvis, in his later years. His lungs were so compromised, he could hardly walk around without getting short of breath.
Some people are willing to damage their voice box, and end up very raspy, or basically lose their voice. I can't think of anyone, just now. Other singers just have a particular sound. Selena, for example. Jennifer Lopez will never be able to sing "I Could Fall in Love" the same way. I was surprised that Crystal did not sing "Blue". LeAnn Rimes did.
