88GT Wounded Warrior Charity Project
« on: May 20, 2014, 08:42:16 am »
I would like to bring all up to date on the efforts to find a suitable Wounded Warrior recipient for the 88GT.  This is the car we've chosen to donate.

First, I contacted Wounded Warriors Project and left a number of voice mails, giving an outline of what we wanted to do. Eventually I made contact with a live person who told me they didn't want the car, suggested we sell it and send them the money from the sale.  When I told her that wasn't an option, she referred me to someone in Florida that may be of help.  A voice mail to that organization and person got no return response.  I abandoned Wounded Warrior Project as a possible source of help.

I then spoke with the Chief of Police and City Attorney of Auburn, Ga.  The attorney gave me an email address for Sentinels of Gwinnett.  I got the same response as I got from Wounded Warriors Project.  Send them the money.

The Chief had offered to help by seeking a candidate through his contacts in the Police community.  After several weeks without hearing from him, I sent an email inquiry about any progress.  That email got no reply.

I called Fox 5 Atlanta and was directed to the newsroom.  The person I spoke with gave me an email address for the producers, to which I sent an outline of our project and what we wished to do.  I was asking that they do a human interest story, which I felt might help to bring in some major sponsors to provide things like tires and paint, and it would be a good public relations opportunity for them.  Fox5Atlanta did not respond, even to say they weren't interested.

Next, I looked at The American Legion as a source of help.  Their website was full of photos of men and women who were of the age comparable to mine, give or take 10 years, but there were no persons other than 1 that was in a wheelchair, who appeared to have a major handicap.  There were no soldiers in uniform in any of the pictures.

The VFW was my next target.  Their website was loaded with photos having military men and women in uniform, interspersed with civilians.  I'm  waiting to see if I get any interest from them.

Roger has come up with a very good recommendation.  Kim "The Kimmer" Peterson, talk show host on WYAY News 106.7, a Fox 5 Atlanta affiliate is a Marine veteran and a big, big supporter of Wounded Warriors.  Their newsroom gave me an email to which I sent our proposal and asking if he would be interested in lending his support.  We'll see what happens.

There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

Wow... I'd like to say I'm surprised, but in a way, I'm not. It's all about the money. It's what the society has become.
I hope the Kimmer is more receptive to the idea.

Going forward... I can offer other alternatives for a charity, next year.

Aside from that, I didn't know Kimmer was back on the air. Thanks for the info. That's going to be the first thing I do when I get in the car this morning. Adding that station to the list.
