Self-tuning ECU?
« on: February 08, 2019, 03:37:00 pm »
I just saw an ad in one of my emails for a FiTech Throttle Body EFI kit (for upgrading carbureted V8 engines), that includes a "self-tuning ECU". Supposedly, after you install it, you just start up the engine, and it begins tuning itself.
I wonder if something like this would work on other engines (for example, the 3800 Fiero at my house)?

Well, a V8 is a 90-degree engine.  The 3800 is a 90-degree engine with 2 cylinders lopped off, I think.  Does it do this every time you start the engine, or just the first time, then it has learned?

For it to learn, there must be at least 1 constant, or at least a known value.  Probably something like the number of cylinders.

Apparently once it tunes itself, it saves the tuning, but you can later change things if you want to.

Ryan thinks the 3800 is in Limp Home Mode.  He said he would reprogram it for us if needed.  Get the ECM number and the broadcast code and bring them to the meeting tomorrow.

Here are the tags on the ECM. You can also see that "95 Buik/Pont 3800" has been written on it.

Are there any identifying tags on the transmission?

There's something written on the lever where the cable attaches. Couldn't see anything else.
