Drive stick?
« on: February 26, 2017, 10:44:41 am »
I grew up driving manual transmissions.  Several different types, not just the standard H.

Sóme years ago, I drove my low-volume, but production Firehawk to an event.  Standard H 6-speed, stock foot clutch.  The valet couldn't drive my car, because mine was a manual.  He insisted that the third pedal was not factory.  Another valet eventually parked my car, thankfully without wrecking.

Last night, I attended a dinner, and the valet who knew nothing of manual transmissions was seated at the table with me.  He started a conversation about the oddity of a third pedal in the car, when people only have 2 feet.  Several other people at the table apparently had no experience with a clutch, either.  While some had heard of a manual, they hadn't seen one, other than in pictures.  Discussion led to questions of why I ”added” a third pedal.  He didn't know much about cars, and said he isn't a car guy.

Finally, I asked the guy what he does now.  He owns an auto repair coverage business.  He said it makes money hand over fist.

He left, then came back a while later, because his car wouldn't start.  I asked about his auto coverasge policy, but he didn't have one, because it ”cost too much”.  I asked if he had AAA, which he did, but he'd used up his monthly tows or something.  So, I suggested he call a tow truck.  He said he couldn't afford it.  His response, he put all his money into fixing his POS Honda.

Is it just me, or is this humorous?

I have always heard it said that mechanics have the most raggedy cars.
I also believe that electronics people have the most "sketchy", convoluted computers and stereo systems. Probably because they know how to nurse them along and make them work for "a bit longer".

The third pedal is so that you have to take one foot off the accelerator while you depress the brake pedal.  It also keeps drivers from riding the brake as they go along down the highway.

Sounds like the auto repair policy guy is a very poor manager of his money if he's making it hand over fist, had already used up his AAA allowances (due to lack of upkeep of the vehicle?) and couldn't afford his own company's product.

I saw where someone's Fiero was stolen and they didn't even make it off the block.  Seems the thief didn't know how to drive a stickshift.  So many people cannot drive a manual transmission car, in these days.  Most of those who can are the ones who like a bit of performance and go for the sportier cars, and the older generations.

All my brothers and my sister can drive stick shifts, as can my wife and daughter.

Steve, I have to fully agree with you about mechanics and their cars, except maybe Don.  I had 2 cousins who owned their own garages.  Drove pieces of crap automobiles.  Benny Allen who had a huge garage and junk yard where the Pullapart North yard is now located, was the same way.
There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

In that case, a bunch of people on this forum are computer gurus.  I've read so many times about their computers crashing.

This guy's Honda was left in gear.  Previously, his car siezed the engine for low oil, ran out of gas several times, and had numerous actual failures.  I told him he should get rid of his car and use public transportation, which would cost farr less than his Honda.  This guy wouldn't have known which end of a tool went where.

I taught my wife to drive in a manual, but she hasn't driven a manual for a long time, and only knows the H.  No 3-speed, no inline, no column, no hydraullic, nothing in trucks, etc.

I'd love to have a manual transmission. My 88 GT has an auto, and it's fun, but I grew up driving manual.
