missing hose on emission system

I recently aquired an 88 GT. I noticed a that there is a hose missing on the engine.  THere is a 1 inch metal tube that comes out of the bottom of the air cleaner and runs along the firewall about 1/2 way up. In the middle of the car it makes a 45% turn up and runs for 2 more inches. At that point it is obious a hose is to connect to it. But i cannot find any loose hose nor a place for a hose to attach to the engine. Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like the pre-recall engine breather tube. I didn't know they still had those in 88. Anyway, it was replaced by a breather tube that connects to the air intake hose just before the throttle body.

The metal line originally attached into the PCV valve in the forward valve cover.  The other end, of course went into the breather canister.  With engine torque, the line would pull the PCV valve out of the valve cover and spray oil.  As TopNotch said, it was replaced by a short metal line that runs from the valve cover over to the air intake tube just in front of the throttlebody.  It's completely mounted onto the engine so it won't pull out. 

There is also a smaller metal line that runs alongside the large line.  One end of it still attaches into the filter canister and the other has a rubber hose that goes to the big round end of the EGR solenoid, just to the right of the thermostat housing.  Because of the need for the smaller line is likely the reason for the larger one still being there.  They are attached to one another.

The 3/4" hose was supposed to be removed from the air filter canister. The fitting on the canister should have either been capped, or the filter canister replaced with one that didn't have the hose fitting. (Depending upon when the recall was done, I've heard of both.)
If the hose is still connected between the canister and the metal pipe on the firewall, your engine is sucking in unfiltered air.
The hose fitting is on the same side of the filter element (the outside) as the throttle body.
Unfortunately, dealers doing this recall work "half-azzed" were a lot more common than you'd like to believe.
