BULBS/LAMPS
Approximately eight bulb types cover all lamps used in the Fiero. Alternatives exist for many of the bulbs which are improvements over the originals. LED (light emitting diode) replacements are becoming popular for tail lights and turn signals but we are unaware of any that are approved by the DOT (US Department of Transportation). We have seen relacement LEDs that fit a few bulbs of cars other than the Fiero and with time we expect to see some that will fit the Fiero, too.

One location which is suitable for LED replacements is the third brake light in '85-88 Fieros. We are unaware of any aftermarket replacements at this time.

Use of LED lights for turn signals usually requires special flasher units; they are not plug & play.

Trunk/Cargo Light                168 or 561
Note 1: We understand that Levine Auto Parts (http://www.levineautoparts.com/27009headlamp.html) makes a high-brightness headlamp replacement that works well on the Fiero. It is a bit pricey but reputedly is of high quality.

Note 2: We understand that #194 bulbs (2 candle power) can be replaced with #168 bulbs (3 candle power) for a little more brightness. We have not verified this swap.

Note 3: We understand that #194PC (1/2" size) are the #194 bulb with "twist-in" socket which fit the instrument panel behind the speedometer, tach, "check engine", and other warning lights.

Note 4: We understand that Xenon bulb 9732 is a direct fit for the 168 and 194 bulbs. It is a 5 watt bulb and not suitable for all Fiero applications due to heat, but it makes a suitable replacement for the side marker lights, "Pontiac" rear lights, courtesy lights, and cargo area lignt. Due to their extra heat, make sure the bulbs are not too close to anything that would be easily affected. Bulbs are available at lighting stores as well as on-line at seagulllighting.com.

CAMSHAFT
Since GM used both the 2.5L and 2.8L engines in many cars other than the Fiero, it is to be expected that the camshaft is also common to many cars. When replacing a camshaft we suggest new rather than used except in cases of expediency. Camshafts, including "hot" versions, are readily available from GM and aftermarket companies such as Crane and CompCams.

'84 2.5L Early:   The early design camshaft has Z8F, Z8C, Z8H, Z8J, or Z8K located on the timing pointer. This cam does not use roller lifters.

CIGARETTE LIGHTER
The Fiero cigarette lighter is common to so many GM vehicles that we make no attempt to list them. If non-factory lighter elements are desired they are available from almost any auto parts store. Here are a few available options for aftermarket lighters:

CLUTCH DISK, FORK, PILOT BEARING, PEDAL
We don't have a great deal of information on Fiero clutch systems but offer what we have. There are two different clutch sizes used in Fieros. The 1984 Fiero and all V6 Fieros came with a 9.125" clutch. The 1985-88 4-cylinder Fieros came with a 8.5" clutch. The clutch parts are interchangeable so if you're replacing the 8.5" clutch it is feasible to use the larger clutch disc and pressure plate. This should provide a bit longer clutch life.
Note that the throwout bearings are specific to each transaxle, not the engine or model year, so be sure to get the correct one when replacing.

Fieros with the Muncie 4-speed transaxle (see "Transmission, Manual") have a pilot bearing but the 5-speed transaxles do not use a pilot bearing.

CLUTCH DISK

'84-88 2.5L: These Fieros used a clutch disc which is unique to these cars. Aftermarket replacements are available from auto parts suppliers.

'85-86 2.8L 4 speed: Same as '84-88 2.5L

CLUTCH FORK and PILOT BEARING We have no information on the Fiero clutch fork and pilot bearing being used in other vehicles. Part numbers for aftermarket clutch forks are shown below.
Clutch Fork

 '84-87 four speed                                 Clutch-In! 14561
 '86-87 five speed                                 Clutch-In! 14720

 '88 except trans code 8ZL                         Clutch-In! 14741
Clutch Pilot Bearing, 2.5L, '84-88 Clutch-In! 14646
CLUTCH PEDAL

The aluminum clutch pedal in '84-86 Fieros is prone to bending. Symptoms of a bent pedal are difficult shifting and/or clutch not fully disengaging. Pedals in '87-88 Fieros and all replacement pedals are steel. The GM part number for the steel pedal is 10066423 but it is generally unavailable. New steel pedals can be found at the Fiero Store (fierostore.com). With a new GM pedal in the '84-86 Fiero the clutch pedal spring is eliminated and a new master cylinder push rod and retainer clip must be installed. We are not sure if this is required with the Fiero Store pedal. The part numbers for the master cylinder push rod are 10126424 for '84-85 and 10126423 for '86. The retainer clip is part number 10040797. A new bushing for the pedal pin is also recommended. It is part number 14094900.

A replacement for the rubber clutch pedal surface for all years is Pedal Up! 20733.

COLD START INJECTOR SWITCH
Cold Start Injector Switch, V-6: The injector switch is available from GM (14084318) but is the same as Bosch part number 0280 130 229 which may be less expensive from a parts store. Note this switch is not the same as the cold start injector itself.

CRANKSHAFT
As in many basic components, GM used the same crankshaft in many cars besides the Fiero. In some cases the Fiero crankshaft is the same as those used in American Motors and Isuzu vehicles!

CROSSOVER PIPE
Crossover Pipe: The V-6 Fiero has a steel coolant pipe which crosses the firewall to connect under-car coolant line to the engine. (The outlet hose from the thermostat neck connects to this pipe.) The pipe is unique to the Fiero and can corrode. Replacements can be custom-made at radiator shops or a stainless replacement can be obtained from rodneydickman.com. They are also available from the Fiero Store (fierostore.com)

CRUISE CONTROL MODULE
GM used three methods of cruise control for the Fiero. In 1984 the cruise control function is integrated into the speedometer circuit card in the instrument cluster.

All '85-88 V-6 Fieros and the '85-86 four-cylinder use a self-contained cruise control module. It is located under the carpet to the right of the accelerator pedal. You will need to loosen or remove the radio console in order to peel back the carpet for access to the module. The cruise control module does not often fail, but when it does it's cost effective to replace it with a salvaged unit.

The '87-88 four-cylinder Fiero has cruise control functions controlled by the Engine Control Module (ECM). The ECM seldom goes bad and if it does then a new one is required. It is much more likely that the mechanical components of the cruise control system will fail than the ECM.

'84:   As mentioned above, the '84 does not have a stand-alone cruise control module. If the electronic portion of the system has malfunctioned it will be necessary to swap in a salvaged speedometer circuit card from a donor '84 Fiero. Be careful in obtaining a donor circuit card; not all '84 Fieros had cruise control. Also note that the '84 cruise control does not include the the ability to tap "Set" and have the speed decrease a little or to tap the "Resume/Accelerate" to speed up a little.

CYLINDER BLOCK
Most Fiero cylinder blocks will exchange with many GM cars since the engines were widely used by GM. This is not true of '87 and '88 Fieros with 2.8L engines. The'87 and '88 2.8L blocks are each unique and will not exchange with each other. We are not sure why but presume that something like crank bearings or coolant passages are different. This does not mean that '87 and '88 engines cannot be swapped in their entirety.

'84 2.5L Cylinder blocks listed for the '85-86 2.5L Fiero can be used in the '84 Fiero if non-roller lifters are used. The 1984 2.5 L Fiero did not use roller lifters.

CYLINDER HEAD
As might be expected, the cylinder heads in a Fiero are common to many GM engines. There were many variations so care must be exercised in getting the correct heads.

'84-86 2.5L XJS: The designation "XJS" is stamped on the front face or right rear of the block. The intake valve has 0.3137" diameter stem. The exhaust valve has 0.3132" diameter stem. The push rod length is 8.3".

The following information was posted to Pennock's Fiero Forum by "Ray", Houston, TX:

Better flowing heads for an '87-88 Fiero 2.5L are found on the '90-93 S-10, S-15 and Blazer. Using these heads requires transferring the intake manifold with the heads, but all other parts from the Fiero will bolt on directly. Changing the heads/intake provides a bit more horsepower and better mileage. The exhaust ports on the newer heads are smaller than those on the Fiero but are more efficient. The combustion chambers are different and provide better fuel/air mixing and better cooling.

'87-88 2.5L: The heads below will interchange if the coolant outlet and positions are switched. Heads must have identification number 10054501, 1006630, 10117770 or 12360340.

Fiero owner Steve Steel researched the 2.8L cylinder heads trying to determine the difference represented by the two identification numbers. Here is what he found out from New Jersey Cylinder Head Co.:

"The two casting numbers (879, 884) are identical heads. The manufactures change the casting numbers every once in a while even though they are producing the same castings. Those casting numbers are 100% compatible with each other along with casting numbers 227/327. They will fit a 2.8L and a 3.1L GM engine from '85-94 that uses that style cast iron head."

DISTRIBUTOR, DISTRIBUTOR PARTS
The 4-cylinder Fiero engine used a distributor only in '84-86. The V-6 Fiero engine used a distributor in all years ('85-88).

'84 2.5L: Equivalent distributors can be found in the following engines:
Pontiac 6000                '84  2.5L
Camaro                      '84  2.5L

Remanufactured and/or new distributors can be obtained at AutoZone and probably other parts suppliers. We understand the AutoZone replacements use newer technology than the original GM distributors and work well. The Fiero Store also has replacment distributors.

Distributor Parts: The distributor gear for the V-6 is rumored to be discontinued but should be obtainable under GM part number 01985769. A worn gear can be the cause for jumpy timing. GM part numbers for other components of the Fiero distributors are as follow:
Part Description          L-4 Distributor   V-6 Distributor
Distributor Shaft          discontinued        10497450
Shaft Bushings               10477565        discontinued

Ignition Module              10882835          10482827
The '87-88 four-cylinder Fiero did not have a distributor and used a Distributorless Ignition System or "DIS". Some of the GM part numbers in this system are:

Part Description          Part Number
Crank Sensor                   10496122
Ignition Module                10467208

EGR TUBE, SOLENOID, VALVE & COVER
EGR TUBE

The 2.8L engine has an EGR tube which goes from the EGR valve to the underside of the intake plenum. The '85-87 EGR tubes are the same but the '88 tube is a bit longer. Earlier tubes can fit an '88 if stretched. New "one size fits all" tubes are available from the Fiero Store. EGR tubes from 2.8L Camaro and Firebird engines as well as some other late '80s Pontiacs will fit the Fiero but do not have the heat shield. These must have the bolt holes slotted on the end which attaches to the EGR valve. These EGR tubes are slightly larger in diameter and seem to be a bit more rugged than the original Fiero EGR tubes and work well on the Fiero V-6.

The EGR tube has a gasket at both ends, AC Delco part number 10239631.

EGR SOLENOID

The 2.8L engine has an EGR solenoid which is actuated by the ECM to open the EGR valve. The EGR solenoid is mounted on an engine bracket near the battery and the EGR valve is mounted on the exhaust pipe near the distributor. The solenoid is unique to the Fiero and was not used on other vehicles. The part number is AC Delco 214-361 and is generally available, although pricey. We understand that EGR solenoids from late '80s S10 trucks can be subsituted but since they are not same mounting or configuration, some "engineering" is required.

EGR VALVE

The EGR valve mounts to the exhaust piping near the distributor and feeds limited amounts of exhaust gas to the underside of the intake plenum when directed by the ECM. The valve is vacuum actuated and can be tested for operation by pulling a vaccum on the diaphragm. (Remove existing vacuum tube, install temporary tube, and suck!) If the valve needs replacement you can use new (AC Delco part number 214-1415) or salvaged. Many cars used the same EGR Valve:

Buick          1973-1976
Chevrolet      1975-1978
Nissan/Datsun  1974-1977
Oldsmobile     1975-1976
Opel           1976
Pontiac        1975-1988
The EGR valve gasket is AC Delco part number 219-581.
EGR VALVE COVER

The EGR valve on the 2.8L Fiero did not come with a cover. Some late '80s and early '90s 3.8L GM engines used the same size EGR valve which did come with black plastic "dress up" covers. These can be retrofitted to the Fiero as a simple snap-on installation for improved appearance. They can be painted to match the intake plenum.

ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS
Some Fiero electrical connectors become brittle with age. Replacements can be found through auto parts stores and the AC Delco web site (acdelco.com). A few connectors can be found in the blister packs in auto parts stores as shown below.

Radio                          '84-88  Conduct-Tite! 85176
A/C high pressure switch       '84-88  Conduct-Tite! 85147
A/C low pressure switch        '84-88  Conduct-Tite! 85148
A/C pressure switch            '85-86  Conduct-Tite! 85146
Cooling Fan Relay              '85-87  Conduct-Tite! 84593
IAC Valve                      '84-88  Conduct-Tite! 85112
TBI solenoid, 2.5L             '87-88  Conduct-Tite! 85138
Ignition module harness, 2.8L     '85  Conduct-Tite! 85135
Ignition switch repair kit,    '84-86  Conduct-Tite! 84599
Washer Fluid Sensor               '88  Conduct-Tite! 85190
Sensing of the coolant level was not used on the Fiero but was apparently planned. This feature can be added per Oliver Scholz's web site: www.fieros.de/en/articles/lowcool.html
NOTE: It is our guess that the above '85 2.8L Ignition Module Harness will fit all Fiero 2.8L engines. Other cars which used the same ignition module harness are:

Buick Skylark                     '85
Chevy Citation                    '85
Chevy El Camino                   '85
Chevy Monte Carlo                 '85
Olds Firenza                      '85
Pontiac Parisienne                '85

EMBLEMS & DECALS
FRONT BUMPER FIERO LOGO

The front bumper emblem was gold in 1984/85 and made of metal and plastic. In 1986 it was changed to silver and made entirely of plastic. The GT model had "Fiero GT" in the emblem. Nose emblems are no longer available from GM but can be found used on eBay from time to time. The Fiero Store (fierostore.com) carries new inserts for around $25. This requires that you have the base of the emblem in which to insert the new badge. Some "New Old Stock" (NOS) badges have been available from fierodave.com but supply is limited.
SAIL PANEL EMBLEM

The "arrowhead" emblem on sail panel frames is part number 20468876 but is difficult to locate via GM. They are still available from the Fiero Store (fierostore.com) for around $12 plus shipping.

If you are unable to find (or do not want to pay for) original emblems, there is an alternative that uses a slightly cheaper and newer version arrowhead emblem but requires some work as follows:

(1) Remove the old arrowhead emblem from the sail panel frame.

(2) Sand off the raised area which contained the old emblem until the surface is smooth.

(3) Repaint the sail panel frame (Plasti-Kote #616 Bumper Black).

(4) Install new peel-and-stick arrowhead emblem, GM Part No. 22591098. This part is $10.46 at gmpartsdirect as of April 2005. It is from a early '90s Pontiac Grand Am and looks better than the original emblem. It is only slightly larger than the original, about the size of the raised area on the sail panel.

REAR BUMPER "PONTIAC" EMBLEM

The "Pontiac" text on the rear fascia of some Fieros (part number 10055155) is no longer available but new emblems are now available from The Fiero Store (fierostore.com). If you do not want to replace the emblem, the mounting holes can be filled and painted. Alternative decals can be used to replace the original raised lettering.
Raised "Pontiac" lettering was used on late '80s and some early '90s Pontiacs (Grand Ams and Sunfire) but the size is different than the Fiero (some larger, some smaller). They are held in place with double-sided tape and do not have the locating protrusions on the back to fit holes in the bumper. It is possible to salvage these and apply them to the Fiero using new double-sided tape. However we do not know if the letters can be arranged to cover the holes in the Fiero bumper.

INDY PACE CAR WINGED EMBLEM

To replace the fender badge on the Indy pace car, go to your GM/Chevy dealer and have them look up P/N 88980647. That's the side badge for the 2004 Indy Impala SS. The badge is the same as a Fiero Indy with the exception there is no red stripe, but that can be added with a steady hand. The price was $69.00 in 2004.
ALTERNATIVE EMBLEMS

Small (about 5/8" high) metal "GT" emblems can be found on the interior front doors of late '80s Chevrolet Berettas. These typically come in red but occassionally in silver. Similar size "SE" emblems can be fround on late '80s Grand Ams, both in silver and red. Larger GT emblems (about 1.25" high) can be found on late '90s Pontiacs. The 1999 Grand Am had a small V-6 emblem on the front fender, part number 2265-8813. All of these emblems can be carefully removed and used on the Fiero.
DECK LID DECALS

Deck lid decals were used on all Fieros except the '86-88 GT to indicate the model. This included "Fiero Indy" in '84, "Fiero", "Fiero 2M4", "Fiero 2M6", and for 1985, "Fiero GT". Colors were typically silver (on a dark car) or Black/Dark Gray Metallic (on a light car). The Indy and GT decals also had a red pinstripe in some of the letters. We have seen some exceptions to this and suspect that dealers or owners may have used other colors. The silver typically fades after a few years and may appear gray or even white. Deck lid decals are no longer available from GM but can be found elsewhere on this web site.
DOOR & OTHER DECALS

Door decals were used only on the 1988 Formula ("FORMULA") and the 1984 Indy (pace car identification). Indy door decals were dealer-applied and some purchasers chose not to have them. The Indy also had a "PONTIAC" windshield decal and a dot-matrix "fade stripe" along the beltline of the car. With the exception of the "FORMULA" decal which was used on the Firebird, GM no longer has these decals. With the exception of the dot-matrix fade stripe, these decals can be found elsewhere on this web site. The fade stripe has been available from phoenixgraphix.com although you need to phone and request it separately.
