May 20 RFTH Trial Run
« on: April 08, 2017, 06:40:34 PM »
We will be doing a scouting run for the 2nd half of RFTH 22 on May 20.  We can meet somewhere up I-985.  We'll be traveling up through Franklin, NC toward Cherokee, then over US 74 to Lake Junaluska, NC where we will begin the scouting run.

So who's going on the scouting run with Scott and me?  I've talked with Jeff Schultz who may drive his Mini and a friend who has a Skye Redline.  Both say they plan to go.  My friend from the Miata club broke his arm.  He's not sure if any others of his group are going.

I'm planning on going.
To Oldone: Since we will only be scouting the 2nd half of the run, we shouldn't be too late.

Maybe 6 or 7 pm at the latest, including lunch and gas stops.

Meet in Clayton and leave by 10.
Drive straight to the beginning of the 2nd half about 1 hour.
Scout 2nd half about 3 to 4 hours.
Drive back from Asheville about 3 hours

I hope the trip wasn't spoiled by the heavy rain we've had, the last 2 nights.

Didnt see any rain until we got back to Braselton. The weather was dang near perfect all day. Saw some awesome scenery and some really fun roads. It will be an excellent outing come September.  I highly recommend everyone come ride along with us.

As an aside, someone made the comment that Charlie doesnt drive like an old man  ;D.

Every year I try to make the run more interesting and fun than the previous year.  This year is a combination of roads we've used on any of 4 or 5 other runs, plus some new ones thrown into the mix.  The final 20 miles to our Saturday hotel is all 4-lane, but most "Old Men" will need that unwind time after nearly 230 miles of lefts, rights, ups, downs and 180's.

As to my driving style---I wouldn't have driven so fast if we hadn't hooked up with that BMW Road Rally Group.  When they pulled off, many of them waved to as we passed on by.  I think they now know that the Pontiac Fiero isn't just a has-been economy car.  And Scott in his 86 and Paul in his Sky Redline were right behind me.  Paul said he hadn't puckered that much since he rode motorcycles.  As Dave and I were returning home, one of the BMW group passed us by, waving.  How about that for recognition?

Yes, the word Maniac did come up.  I think Dave used it a couple of times to describe a van that we got into a chase with.  He was cutting the corner on every curve, whether the oncoming lane was visible, or not.  Swinging wide fully into the left lane as he approached blind right corners.

Dave and I were a little ahead of Scott and we hit the rain just inside Georgia.  But as Scott said, prior to that, it was a wonderfully sunny day on the road with some wonderful people.
