It depends on the engine. Some are inherently noisy.
But noisy valves may point to problems, not bad adjustment. If they're still noisy after adjustment, try adding Rislone to your oil. Rislone is the one additive recommended by Smokey Yunick back in the day. Many additives are "snake oil", but Rislone is pretty good at cleaning stuck lifters.
I read somewhere that it is best to adjust the valves with the engine at operating temperature. It would be tough to do on a Fiero V6, though. It would cool somewhat by the time you got the valve covers off.
