Are ceilings getting lower?

The house I lived un when I was little had a ceiling that was 16' at the sides, and 28' at the peak.  We had a stove, but no ducting.  The bedrooms were on the second floor, arranged around the perimeter.

Later, we had a 10' ceiling.  The next place had a 9' ceiling.  Today, someone told me that ceilings in new houses are 8'.

How are houses supposed to cool, when there is nowhere for the hot air to go?

There are lots of homes in my area with 12 ft. ceilings.  New homes.  Usually more upscale.  Most of the starter homes are 8 ft. ceilings. 

Some of the limitations in the more rural areas are due to the lack of firefighting equipment capable of reaching higher elevations.  For instance here in my county, four stories is the tallest building allowed.

Yes, sadly, that will preclude moving to Auburn.  My heart was so set on t 5th-floor library.  There are already so manylaws here.

You could put one floor underground or build on a slope and have a terrace level at the back.  I'm not aware that Barrow County has a real ladder truck.  I believe The City of Winder has just one stationed downtown.

I used to only room in hotels where I could get in under the 4th floow, because I do not want to die by fire, and was told that they could only reach up to the third floow.  Then some of my firemmen clients advised me that that was not an issue.  Didn't help those in the twin towers much, though.
