3.4 TDC motors
« on: August 03, 2019, 01:41:45 pm »
Starting this thread because I know others had mentioned interest in them.

Next week I am acquiring two brand new LQ1 crate motors and in the search for needed parts found a third (rebuilt .30 over) for a song but in Arizona so add shipping.

It is a well documented swap so I will keep those posts to my build thread but was wondering what people had for personal experiance here? Anyone sitting on a parts horde that might have some of the needed stock components to make my crate motor a runner?

Any intrest in the third motor and I will connect you with the seller. I will also have the motor from the Formula fastback available once my swap is done.

I just keep buying parts and still havw nowhere to keep them 😥 guess these motors will live in my truck bed for a bit.

The 3400 DOHC has about 200HP, revs up there, but is a bit temperamental.  From what I've been told, it is not an engine for longevity.

This is not a simple swap, but it feels really good in a Fiero.  With the right exhaust, it sounds good, too.  Tyler's Toy has this motor.

As shipped, they were worth at least 210. With a less restrictive intake and headers, they're probably worth at least 240-250.
They are a bit finicky - you have to keep the timing belt changed. (Probably not an issue, for a long while, on a crate motor.) But they're supposed to wind up to 7200, all day long. The sound is probably like a healthy Fiero V6. Squared.

(Since timing belts have become a sore spot with me after the Honda Odyssey cluster-fest, I'll mention that the earlier 3.4 TDC engines were not interference engines, but the later ones - 96/97 - are rumored to be, due to the redesigned heads. Have not verified either way, but it's something to think about, before procrastinating the timing belt change.
BTW... The 3.5 Honda V6 is a really sweet package, in spite of it's "crash tendencies". Might even make a neat Fiero swap. Merely an unsolicited observation.)

Zack... Just keep moisture out of the ports. If my shop was built, I'd offer to let you store them there.
As I mentioned on my FB thread, I may have some pieces left over after my swap, but it's not going to happen for a while. Once I see what I don't need, I'll help you out however I can.

With a 100-shot of nitrous, they really move.

Ya, have been starting the parts acquisition process and have upper and lower intakes with a throttle body all shipping Monday.

I don't mind doing timing belts every 50k as called for. Good excuse to drop the cradle and check everything.

All the ports are still sealed from the factory so no worries there.

My roommate moves in a few weeks so I can start making more perminent plans right after.
