Trailer Hitch
« on: January 24, 2020, 08:48:30 am »
I have a light weight 1952 aluminum runabout on a single steel beam trailer, total package is less than 900 lbs with a tongue weight right around 100 lbs. I noticed that there are old stock bolt on hitches readily available cheap on eBay for 84-87.  I assume 88 with its changes is different and had no aftermarket support.

Anybody know the towing capacity?  Anybody add one to an 88?  can the 84-87 be modified to fit an 88?

I don't know what the capacity is, but back when Ed Parks owned the Fiero Factory (Tony AL), he would tow a Fiero on a tow dolly with another Fiero. That's how he built up his stock of parts cars in the beginning, before he got a more suitable vehicle for towing Fieros.

The rear of the Fieros are no different.  The difference in the 88 is where the suspension components attach.  Ron768 has a hitch on his 85SE and I think he tows some pretty good loads with it.

The Fiero Store sells a hitch that's made for all years.  One ton towing capacity.  I think the major concern with this would be the braking power of the Fiero.

The Fiero is rated to tow 1000 lbs. I have towed my KZ 1000 LTD which weighs about 600 lbs. My trailer weighs about 125 lbs. My 85 has no problem towing this at highway speed.

The Fiero is rated to tow 1000 lbs.

Good to know.  I don't expect to be doing it often but the wagon needs some repairs and I'd like to take it off trailering duty if I could.
