Garage lift
« on: January 10, 2021, 09:32:43 pm »
So I’m so close to having my garage ready. I want to invest in some sort of a lift. Problem is the 8ft ceiling.  If money was no object I would go with the MaxJax lift. But I’m leaning towards the harbor freight scissor lift. I saw Topnotch’s Quickjack but not in action. Thoughts? Recommendations? Donations? 😂

Just doing some math in my head.  If you use a lift, to get under the car standing, you at say 6 feet tall, the car another 5 feet high, plus the ceiling, and the roof would need to be about 14 feet high, depending on the pitch of the roof.  At 8 feet, you may be able to crawl under the Fiero.

For those of you curious about that, I bought myself a Quickjack as a Christmas present to myself. So far, Ive only run it with no car on it, which they recommend you do to get air bubbles out of the hydraulic fluid. BTW, the hydraulic fluid these things use can be ATF (either Dexron or Mercon). I happened to have a few quarts of Mercon on hand, meant for the Ford truck that I no longer have, so I put that in the Quickjack reservoir.
The Quickjack lifts a maximum of 20 inches. That's enough to a number of jobs (for example, changing the AC compressor), but not enough to lift the car off the cradle and roll the engine (on a dolly) out from under the car. I'll have to do that job the old way (lift the car with a cherry picker).
The more complex the mind, the greater the need for the simplicity of play.

Well, 20 inches is something, but that is still very tight.

I’ve done the math. With the Fiero I can lift about 48” with the proper lift. So not walk but more than crawl underneath.

48" may allow enough to drop the engine.

It’s close. Plus if I get the MaxJax lift at $3000 I would modify the ceiling for one more foot.

My 2 post needs a 12 foot ceiling minimum

Scott, my dream is to move and build a real shop but COVID said NO!

My plan is either 40x40 or 40x60 either with 14ft ceilings and two twin post. Hopefully it will come true someday.

But what ever I buy here can move so that’s a plus.
