The Market / Looking for "speaker seats".
« on: September 15, 2013, 02:46:57 pm »
A friend is looking for two pairs of speaker seats (84-85) preferably with harnesses.
Upholstery condition is not important as he is going to recover them anyway. Just need good cores with tracks.

Coming home from Indy, it sounded like an M80 went off under the car. Lots of smoke. A/C quit working.
I discovered that the high side (discharge) hose actually slipped out of the crimp, just after the "muffler" in the line. (Made a hell of a noise.)

What is likely to cause this? I'm thinking there's an obstruction somewhere. Please read on...

The last time I had the orifice tube out, the fluid was very dark, but there were no solids, and the tube wasn't blocked.

Background...
It's a 4.9 conversion. Uses the Caddy compressor. Everything else looks to be stock Fiero. There are no pressure switches on the compressor. The only compressor connections are to the clutch coil. Still have the low pressure switch on the accumulator.
When the compressor cuts off, the low side pressure seems to be extremely high. When it kicks on, the pressure drops to normal levels (well... before it blew the hose off, anyway.) Don't know if that's significant or not. IIRC, it's always been that way.

The system seems to have lost some efficiency over the years. Before I found a leak near the orifice tube, it has typically required a recharge every summer.
The compressor still dragged on the engine when it kicked in, so I have to believe it's working. Before the hose blew off, it was cooling fairly well.

Anyone? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Club News / Second Annual Hot Summer Wheels Car show - Saturday July 12th
« on: February 09, 2013, 11:06:40 am »
Announcing the Second Annual Hot Summer Wheels Car and Motorcycle Show
To be held at the Clinton Nature Preserve in Villa Rica GA.
A benefit for Boy Scout Troop 39.

Several of us attended last year, and had great fun!

There will be live music, brought to you by The Way Back Band.
Vendors, prizes, goodies, food, and a soft, comfortable environment where you can relax.

This is no asphalt or concrete parking lot. The venue is a large well manicured grass field, so you can take off your shoes and rest your feet. There will be room beside or behind the cars to set up your lawn chairs, or a picnic. Room for an EZ-Up if you desire.
There are walking/running trails, and a walking track if you desire. (Sorry no motor vehicles on the tracks or trails. This is, after all, a nature preserve.)
Rest room facilities are provided.

Updated links will be posted. Be sure to watch this space, or the newer posts in the thread.

Just like the title says. I'm looking for a pair of 84-87 front springs that haven't been cut.
Also interested in a rear coil-over kit.

The Market / Cleaning out the garage. See below.
« on: October 07, 2012, 03:58:19 pm »
Cleaning out my parts that I have been accumulating since '97.
As I run across things, I'll add them here. All parts are "make offer", unless specified otherwise. Mostly just want them gone.

Two V6 throttle bodies.

V6 middle intake manifold.

4.9 fuel rails with regulator.

4.9 intake manifold.

Two sets of 19# Cadillac injectors. Condition of some is ?? Most are good.

Rodney Dickman replacement cat for V6. Only used for a few thousand miles.

One pair of GT tips. 90 degree pipe has been removed just before the "split". Will need to be welded, but otherwise good.

2" (I think) straight through "chambered" muffler. (Think '69 Z28 style".) 18" long. Fits in the stock location.
Quite loud, but still quieter than straight pipes.

Complete 12" Corvette rotor upgrade for '88s. Includes rotors, *both* types of brackets (offset and newer dogbone style), centering rings and all fasteners. (I have heard that the two types of brackets can be "stacked", to allow the fitment of Viper rotors, but have not ever seen it done.) Uses stock 88 calipers. Note: if your car is lowered in the front, the tips of the lower control arms may scrape the backs of the rotors. People usually grind or hammer the tips of the control arms for clearance, if necessary. This does not affect all cars.

88 Formula front springs, shortened by 1 coil. These came from a car that I parted out. I've never driven on them.

All prices are pickup only. Not interested in shipping at this time.
Can possibly arrange to meet you, if we can work it out.

Trades?
Looking for an L67 (3800SC, series 2) throttle body. 97(?) or newer.

Also looking for 90-91 Camaro or Firebird V8 TPI MEMCAL (chip/carrier) for 7730. Have  3.1 MEMCAL to trade. (This is the perfect trade if you bought a V8 TPI 7730 for your V6.) Can look up broadcast codes to verify, if you're interested but don't know what your 7730 came from.

Added... Black stock lower quarters. No GFX. From Formula.

The Market / Built 3.4 dropout.
« on: June 21, 2012, 03:48:28 pm »
From Chuck Willyard (fierochild) ...

Hey Steve, Would you please let the local Fiero group know that I am
parting out my car.  It has a reciently completely rebuilt 3.4 with my
custom intake and truleo's custom exhaust.   This engine produces 172 hp
at the wheels.  It is broke in with about 75 hours on it.  (I have the
dyno sheet to prove the power.)  I also have the documentation on the
intake mods to allow suffceint air flow.  I also have the machine shop
build order, where I spent over $1800.00 on the engine.  The engine is
worth the $3000.00 I put into it.  I have it for sale on Pennocks
@$3000, but don't expect it to sell soon.  I will let any of the club
members have the engine with a new Spec clutch for $1900.00.  I also
have an 88 getrag transmission for $200.00, an 88 cradle in good shape
for $100.00.  88 front spendles, hub bearings, brake calipers, rotors
steal braided lines and pads for sale. $200.00.

I will give any club member a 10% discount.

========================
Chuck can be reached at 678-300-2510.
I watched Chuck document some of this build on Pennocks. This engine (as well as the one in my red coupe that I sold) were both loosely based on Oreif's build. If you're at the point that you need an engine rebuild, or are just looking for some bolt-in power, this might be the better option.
YMMV.

Steve

The Market / "They catch on fire, Don't they?" T shirts
« on: March 13, 2012, 09:31:07 pm »
No. They're NOT mine.
Docholliday on Pennock's is doing another run, this time in colors.

The ones I've seen from the previous run are very good quality. 100% cotton, "Beefy T's".

Club News / Anyone heard frome Oldone / Dewey since the tornadoes?
« on: April 30, 2011, 08:15:26 pm »
I heard there were no fatalities in Cartersville, but I haven't seen him post here or on Pennocks.
I hope everything is okay with him.

The Market / '91 4T60E tranny
« on: February 23, 2011, 01:02:04 am »
It's a '91 4T60E from my 4.9 car. Converting to a 5 speed.
Shifts good. Has adjustable modulator. Probably could use a fluid and filter change. Pan gasket needs replaced. ~100K.

This is for local pick up only. No shipping.
Will be in the car and available for test drives until after St. Paddy's Day. I'm driving it home from the parade and beginning the swap.
Cheap. Offers?

Thanks.

88 Fiero coupe with full Formula conversion including instrumentation, drivetrain and suspension w/ rear sway bar. Everything but the VIN.
Has Grooms 3.4 shortblock with custom ported heads and lower intake. ($800 worth of just head work.)
Trueleo intake and Darrell Morse throttle body.
Crane H-272 cam. (Probably the "fattest" cam that will fit in this engine without extensive head work.)
19lb. Bosch injectors
FOCOA headers.
Getrag 5 speed rebuilt by Mantrans. Shifts fine. No noises. Only a few thousand miles.
SPEC clutch.
Newer clutch master and slave cylinders. Installed with tranny.
A/C.
Power windows.
Tilt wheel and delay wipers.
Trunk popper.
Mr. Mikes leather.
New headliner and visors.
Fiero Store glove box.
Plush Fiero Store floor mats.
Delco CD player with EQ from mid 90s(?) Pontiac. Looks just like stock Fiero radio.
Wiring for MP3 player.
Fairly new cat and Ocelot exhaust. GT tips. (Sounds nice with the cam. :D )
Has Fiero Warehouse whale tail.
Has clear headlight housings with replaceable halogen bulbs. Better than even Silverstars.
Could use paint, but it doesn't look bad.
ECM has been relocated to inside firewal behind passenger seat.
The 5 spoke wheels are already spoken for. The car will include the polished and dark gray repainted stock 88 Formula wheels (pictured in the first and second photos below.)

The bad?
The upper surfaces, particularly the hood, could stand to be repainted.
The piping on the drivers seat is kind of worn.
The reverse lights don't work. This is part of the tranny linkage. The wiring and switch are both good.
Has a crack in the right front fender. I have a replacement '88 red fender. Just hasn't been enough of an issue to change it.
There's a dent in the drivers side floor pan. I was doing a gravity bleed on the clutch and jacked it in the wrong place. It doesn't really hurt anything, but it's definitely a WTF moment.

I built this car to be reliable.
I would be comfortable jumping in and driving it anywhere.
Southern car. Garaged for most of its life.
Zero rust.
Carfax will show a minor off-road excursion. Happened before I bought it.

My asking price is $3500.

For full price I will include:
A complete fastback conversion, including the clip, decklid, tail lights, D-plates, grilles and harness.
A *perfect* hood. It's black in color but the finish is flawless and shiny as glass. Came off of a low mile Formula that got a "norms front end" treatment.
A pair of Fiero Warehouse IMSA side scoops, similar to the ones on my gray car.
I'll throw in a short shifter that Fieroguru (from Pennocks) made. Was too short for me.

I will include a bad Getrag that can be used for parts, if any are required to fix the reverse lights issue.

I will also consider trade for 1st gen ('82-'93) S10 with V6 and extended cab only. +/- Cash.

Why am I selling?
My gray 4.9 was too spendy for most folks.
We're armpit-deep in cars. I need to thin the herd, and I also need a truck.
If my other car sells, I will keep this one. Gotta have at least one Fiero. :D

These are the wheels that will come with the car.

The engine is much the same. Not quite as clean, though.

Some of the porting work.

General Discussion / Solstice crash on The Dragon last weekend.
« on: August 15, 2009, 10:52:22 am »
FieroVin posted this on Pennocks, in the RFTH thread.
Apparently there was one fatality and another critical injury.

++++++++++++++++++++
Hi all,

I just wanted to say have fun but please please be safe. I was at the Dragon last weekend with my Solstice and we lost one member from our group with another critically injured.

Here is the report from killboy.com:

Kinda slow one last week, which made it really nice for those who were here enjoying the ride/drive. Lots of folks smiling and having fun, and we've got a great collection of highlights below as a result, but as is often the case, tragedy can quickly overshadow all the sunshine in the world. Last Saturday night was one of those unfortunate moments. A member from the Sky/Solstice group was giving another member a ride, and lost control on Hwy 28 about 1/8th of a mile from the turn off from 129. The car side-swiped a tree and the passenger was killed instantly. Driver was, and still is in critical but stable condition. He was flown out and friends on the scene said the Graham County EMS team did an amazing job, working very fast to stabilize the injured and get a helicopter on route immediately.

The left turn they wrecked in is a fairly tricky one, in that there is always gravel around the outside of it because there are dumpsters there and people going in and out all the time. Most traffic doesn't stay wide through the turn, so the gravel accumulates. If a person is driving nice line, staying well away from the yellow, they are punished with a loss of traction. We will try to take a broom out there as often as possible and work on keeping it cleaner. (along with the rest of the Gap as always) The dumpsters there were also very prone to attracting wildlife, mostly bears, but I think they have made upgrades to keep the bears out, so I'm not sure if there was an animal involved in the crash or not.

It shouldn't need to be repeated, but let's all please be careful when we have precious lives in our cars or on our bikes. Imagine the sorrow this poor driver is going to face if he survives. Our thoughts are with the families of the Nellie Tubbs and Keith Wolven.

+++++++++++++++++++

I'm not sure if this is anyone known to any of our members.
Regardless, I offer my condolences to their families and friends.
Horrible thing. :(

Edit - Looks like my coupe is sold, so I'm keeping this one.

Many of you have seen this car.
I have driven it to quite a few club functions including several St. Paddy's parades.
I am now offering it for sale.

It started life as an 88 Formula.
I completed the fastback conversion about three years ago, and had a professional panel off (mostly) paint job done in Pontiac Stealth Gray.
After the paint was completed, I had the 4.9/4T60E installed at the Fiero Factory.
The chip has been modified to remove the PassKey and speed limiter, and to make the fan kick on earlier.

It has Fiero Warehouse IMSA scoops and whaletail.
FRD Gladiator wheels (Australian made. Long story.) 17x7, front. 17x8, rear.
Tires are 215/45-17 front and 245/45-17 rear.

It has earned an "Outstanding In Class" at the 2007 World Of Wheels and a "Best Of Class" at the 2008 World Of Wheels.
Those trophies will go with the car.

I have spent the last couple of years attending to the little details that make the car nicer and more reliable.
It is now to the point that I would climb in it and drive it anywhere.

It needs nothing.
The interior is in great shape. No tears in the seats.
New headliner installed when it came from the paint shop.
Has plush Fiero Store mats, glovebox, and console tray.
Also has a UP3 CD radio with EQ. (The older one with the gray knobs and the blue clock display. Looks *exactly* like the Fiero radio.)

Pics...

I've had the engine out, since Ed's folks installed it.
(It needed oil pan gaskets, a crank seal, and a water pump gasket. I also just wanted to see "what made it tick". I was quite impressed with the quality of the install.)
I know just about every bolt on the car, by name. (Some of those names are even repeatable in polite company.      :D )

The exhaust has been changed since the pics were taken. The Ocelot system that was installed was just too quiet with the 4.9.
(Ed warned me that that would be the case.  He was right.)
It now has a single 2.5" mandrel bent system with a cat and a glasspack, which empties into a single Corvette resonator exiting on the driver's side.
It sounds and flows much better.
The right side cutout in the rear bumper has been filled with a painted aluminum panel. (easily removed.)

I recently installed an Allante intake and the steel rocker supports.
I also will inlcude a set of Rodney Dickman ball joints that I purchased but haven't installed. (Didn't need them.)

Why am I selling?
I need to thin the herd.
We have too many cars and I also need a truck.

I have over $13K invested in the car.
I know that I will never recoup all of that. I will consider reasonable offers.

If you have any questions, please ask.
Post here, or email shamilton(AT)mindspring dot com

Thanks!
