I'm curious about RFTH #6.  What was the significance of the bear?

Florida or Alabama hosted that one.  Georgia didn't start until #7.  The Great Smoky Mountains is home to many a black bear.  I don't know where the run was based, but if it was up in the Cherokee, NC area, that would be the significance.
There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

Ok.  I take it you weren't on that run.  What is the earliest run someone still with the club did?

For me, the first run I actually did on the scheduled date was #8.  I was part of the scouting for # 7, but the wife and daughter had planned vacation in Denver and I didn't get to make that run.

Roger was probably on one of the earlier runs, like maybe #2 or 3.

Wow!  I remember that someone was on some runs before they joined the club.

RFTH 5 shows that it was hosted by GFC.  Was that a courtesy, and official wasn't for another 2 years?

The event rotated between Florida, Alabama, and Georgia.  Eventually, Florida and Alabama gave it to Georgia because Florida had Daytona Week and Alabama had The Fiero Factory Swap Meet.  All of the Runs were in or nearer to Georgia.  I don't know how the other clubs determined the routes or if they even scouted them.  Maybe they just looked in an Atlas and picked out roads that looked good.

Some other clubs look at a map to pick their route.  I like your planning method better.

When I pick a route for myself, I use a map and the internet.  I rode one Sunday that was fun.  Having done it, I wouldn't take a group there.  The turns are just too hard to determine.  I, um, slid into the other lane, fighting it all the way.  Twice.  Both turns were unmarked.  The other turns were marked.
