Option (RPO) Codes
« on: March 04, 2019, 10:16:35 pm »
OPTION CODES
Sometimes it is necessary to consult the list of "option codes" on your Fiero to determine which specific parts it contained as-built by the factory. For example, it is difficult to know the capacity of an alternator by looking at it. The list of option codes (also called RPO or Regular Production Option codes) provides this information. The option codes are printed on a sticker called the "Service Parts Identification Label" located on the left front fender well next to the spare tire. (This label is often referred to as the "RPO Tag" or "RPO Label".) Here is what the codes mean:

WA-NNNN (N = any number) code on the bottom of the RPO tag is the Fisher Body "WA" paint number. (Fisher Body is the division of GM that produced and painted the car body.) Use this number when buying equivalent paint from any paint supplier. Touch-up paint suppliers such as PlastiKote and Dupli-Color also use this number as a cross-reference. Use the cross-reference manual found by the paint display in your auto parts store to obtain the correct spray can or bottle for your car.

Note that the two digit numbers in the above list (14, 18, 40, 81, etc.) are also paint codes. Some GM cross-references use this number also. If you see something like "81U/16L" it means the upper portion of the Fiero is "81" or Bright Red and the lower portion of the car (ground effects) is "16", Silver Metallic.

The 88 spring codes are listed as 6RB* 7RB* 8UB* and 9UB*  (Depending upon which corner, as above.)
There are also three different spring lengths. All 88 spring rates are the same.

*The front springs are coded ARB, ARC or ARD. Tags on the springs will show this code. (6 or 7 will replace the first character, on the RPO label.)
The rear springs are coded PUB. PUC, or PUD.   Again, the tags on the springs will show this code. (8 or 9 will replace the first character, on the RPO label.)

This will be one of the most sparsely populated RPO tags you will ever see.

Essentially, the only "options" are A/C, tilt wheel, delay wipers, cassette, tinted windows, and W02 "sports appearance package".
The Sports Appearance Package was commonly known as "the Western Edition", and included body-colored rockers and rear lower fascia, and a wing. It was only available on the 88 base coupe, in red or white.

There are just about always some missing codes. I have yet to find an "all inclusive" RPO list for just the Fiero.

In looking at transmissions, the MX1 & MV9 are in the RPO codes list, but were never on any Fiero.  The THM200C (MV9) is a logitudinal transmission, and not a particularly good transmission.  It was not on any pre-production or non-production Fiero.  The MX1 was a Mazda transmission.  As best as I can tell, GM did not use it.
