What do you know? It really works!
« on: March 03, 2020, 03:58:29 pm »
My silver Formula has been blowing quite a bit of smoke on startup. A common problem with 2.8 engines with a few miles on them is leaky valve stem seals. This allows oil to drip into the cylinders while the engine is off, which then burns upon startup, and makes a cloud of smoke.
Well now my Formula only makes a little bit of smoke at startup, thanks to this:

I learned about this stuff from Scotty Kilmer, the guy who waves his hands too much in the video I posted in this thread. He's actually a pretty good mechanic with 50 years of experience. He answers questions from viewers in some of his videos, and someone asked him what to do about a leaking main seal. He said to try the AT-205 first, and possibly avoid an expensive repair.

I kept that in stock when I had the shop. The stuff really works. I never found a better price than Amazon even through my wholesalers.

That's surprising.
I always figured that stuff (all brands) was snake oil.
Nice to know it actually does something.

I bet it is something like diacetone alcohol in a thick oil base.  Diacetone swells rubber like you wouldn't believe but it stays intact.  Only issue is that you cannot stop using it as it will be pulled out and diluted by oil and slowly evolve as the motor heats up, so it will start to smoke again and you'll have to pour in another bottle.  They have you as a repeat customer now as long as you own it.

How hard is it to change the seals?   Can you do it on the motor?  The old put a rope in the cylinder through the spark plug hole leaving a tail hanging out to retrieve it by and rotate motor by hand to keep the valve from dropping in, pull the rocker, keeper, spring and change the seals one cylinder at a time trick.  Or is the front side too hard to get to?

The stuff is very runny, so it does not have a thick oil base. The back mentions that it contains glycol ether, and mentions all the health hazards of that (the stuff could kill you).
It says that the bottle will treat 6 quarts, and to adjust usage according to capacity. I pored about 2/3 of the bottle into my crank case.
