Posting pictures with PIP
« on: November 18, 2009, 05:51:25 pm »
Now you can post pictures for use in this forum with PIP (Pennock's Image Poster).
First, you need to download the PIP Setup program.
Run the PIP Setup program to install PIP on your computer.
Then run PIP.
The next step is a little complicated, but you only need to do it once. You need to load the profile for saving pictures to our website. To do this, click on the "New" button near the bottom of the PIP window. Copy the text from the code box below into the box beside "Automatic Configuration" in PIP.
Code: [Select]
http://gafiero.org/files/gfc.pipThen click "Get". If you are successful in loading the profile, the Ga Fiero Club banner will now be displayed in PIP.

Now you're ready to post pictures!
Click the "Browse" button to find the picture on your hard disk that you want to post. When you find it, click on it and click Open. The picture will now be shown in the preview box of PIP. To upload it, click "Post It!" PIP will let you know if your picture uploads OK.

Now you're ready to put your picture in a message. Just go to the place in your message where you want the picture, and type Ctrl-V (hold down the Ctrl key and type V). The URL of your uploaded picture along with the "img" and "/img" tags will magically appear. Click the Preview button below the message box to verify your picture.

Notes:
This program is for Windows only.
If a picture of the same name has already been uploaded, PIP will automatically rename your picture by appending a number to the name.
PIP limits the size of picture you can upload, and will let you know if yours is too big. Use a photo editing program to make it smaller if it is.

More info on using PIP...
When you click on "Post It!", the link to your picture is copied to the Windows clipboard, which is why you can paste it into a message with Ctrl-V. But if you should lose the windows clipboard info somehow, you can recover the link by clicking on the "History" button. You will see the pictures you have uploaded then. Click on the button beneath the picture you want to put in a message, and it's link will be copied to the Windows clipboard again, and will also be displayed below the pictures.

For you technical guys, PIP is an automated one-way FTP client. When you click on the "Post It!" button, it copies the selected picture from you hard disk to a pre-selected directory on the Ga Fiero Club website using FTP. You don't have to know the usual stuff needed for FTP transfer, such as the login or password, because these are stored in the profile that you get when you initially install it.
The login and password are unique to the PIP picture directory, and cannot be used to access any other part of the Ga Fiero Club website.

Not only does it work, but the pictures will remain as long as the club website remains. They won't mysteriously go away like pictures posted on some of those photo posting sites.
Feel free to test PIP in other threads on this forum. (Especially since only paid members and club officers can post replies in this thread.)
