Oops. About to be illegal.
« on: October 31, 2020, 08:49:42 am »
Just noticed that my plates expire this month.  Rrgh!  My fault, but poor timing.  I wonder if the places are open on weekends.

Contrary to popular belief, time is not on my side.

Laws vary by state with some requiring you to renew on or before your actual birthday while others require renewal by the last day of the month.  Then, if the last day of the month is on a weekend, they will extend it until the next business day.
There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

This is for the plates.  My birthday is on my license.

I believe that Georgia was giving everyone "a mulligan" regarding plate renewals, due to COVID. I'm not sure if it's still in effect or not, though.

The DMV was closed the month my license expired.  I had to wait 2 months.

This is for the plates.  My birthday is on my license.

My birthday is on the 3rd of the month.  In Georgia, if I get stopped for anything after the 3rd and my plate doesn't have a new sticker, I can be cited for expired plates.  But as Raydar indicated, that may not be the case at the moment.

The last time I renewed by plates, I went to a Kroger store where there was a machine set up for that purpose. I don't know if all of Georgia has that, but Gwinnett County does.
My Fieros are exempt from emission testing, and my Ford Escape is also because of my age, but I have to apply for the exemption online each year.

So, your vehicles' plates have your birthdate on them?

Our plates have the month of registration.  Nothing to do with a birthday.  We can renew for 1 or 2 years.

I made it in.  Got there 45 minutes prior to open, and was 12th in line.  The line kept growing behind me.  Some 20 people behind me, a lady called over, asking if I had a mask.

"Sure do!  Thanks."

She called back, telling me I needed to put it on.

"Sure don't!"

She yelled something.  Seriously?  Outside?

Anyway, I got new tags, so I'm good for 2 more years.

There used to be a drive-through inspection place.  I have never used such.  I like to take the opportunity to look at my vehicle, while it's up on the lift.

The renewal sticker only has the county, month and year on it.  The registration slip that they as for has the person's birthday month and day as being the day the plate expires.  Only one year renewals here.

I learned a long time ago to go to DMV the first week of the month.  Usually there has been only 5-7 people ahead of me.  My sister's birthday is on the 31st of the month before me usually waits until the end of the month, and she has to stand in a long line.  That may be others waiting until the last minute, or as we're allowed to do here, they may be purchasing their tag up to a month prior to expiration.

Of course, we also have the option of ordering by mail for an extra dollar mailing fee, or we can do it online and have it mailed for an extra dollar.

I have never shown my registration, but itxs the info on the plate that matters.  If, however, your license has expired, that is a separate thing.

We can renew early, without penalty, or late, with penalty.  Some DMV locations are always busy.  Pre-COVID, there was a DMV near my work that never had more than 4-5 people in line.

Not always the case: I have veteran plates on my cars, no county is displayed. Since I can't get veteran plates for the trailers, they do have the county displayed on them. The registrations still show my birthday as the expiration date

Scott, look at the renewal decal on your plates. I believe it will have your county on it.
