Fiero troubles
« on: May 14, 2021, 10:09:30 pm »
I've been noticing some issues with the Fiero.  I went through a drive-through for some food.  When I got to the window to pay/get the food, the actual window shelf was higher than the roof of my Fiero.

Later, when going to the bank to use the ATM, I could reach the cash slot, just fine.  Unfortunately, the card slot was far too high.

I don't really have much trouble at fast food drive thru's.  But the bank ATM's are impossible.  When I drive the Fiero to the bank ATM, I park far enough away from the ATM that I can fully open my door.  I leave the engine running and set the parking brake.  I have to get out of the car to use the ATM even though it makes me more vulnerable.  For that reason, I prop my 12 gauge pump against the front of the ATM.  Never had a problem, yet.

With all of that said... Why do they have Braille on the buttons at the drive through?

Years ago I had blind girlfriend, so I learned a bit of braille. Not only is it strange that they have braille on things like bank drive through ATM's, but how they spell things is also sometimes strange. The braille system does not have separate upper and lower case letters, but it has a symbol for upper case, which proceeds an upper case letter. If there are two of these symbols in a row, it means that the following text is all caps.
On things like ATM's, the normal text is always all caps, and so any braille of the text always has the "all caps" symbols before the actual text. I always wondered why they bother to do that. It doesn't change the meaning at all, but just takes up space.
The more complex the mind, the greater the need for the simplicity of play.

Driver test in Braille.  No discrimination.

I had a blind roommate in college, and later a blind employee.  Neither of them could read Braille.

The only blind person I have ever met that could read Braille was blind at a very early age.  Ones who lost their sight later in life seemed to never learned Braille.

Both these people were born blind.  Well, they could see light vs dark.

Wait what.  You don't get out of the car to go to a cash machine. 乁ʕ •̀ ۝ •́ ʔㄏ

I used to work in a school they had a "classroom of the future" that was supposed to contain modern ideas/equipment  etc.

I don't know if they thought many people in the future would be blind but they had braille under all the classroom signage.  So under the "Classroom of the future" sign on the door was (I guess) the same written in braille.

Also in this classroom was a ground source heat pump and a glass floor showing the pipework.  On the wall was written. "Through the glass floor you can see the pipework for the ground source heat pump..blah blah blah" ...and underneath something written in braille...surely not the same words!!!

No, no.  In Braille was inscribed, "BLIND PEOPLE EXCLUDED".

In the future, blindness will be eliminated.  They're going to pass a law.

My friend and I corresponded by "snail mail". I had a template and stylus for writing in Braille. When you write Braille, you have to write backwards, because you're punching the back side of the paper to make the raised dots that will be felt on the front side. It was quite difficult for me, but she could write while carrying on a conversation without thinking about it, and do it very rapidly. It was amazing.
Of course, she had to have someone else address the envelope, because the post office can't read Braille. Blind people don't need stamps, they can just have "Free matter for the blind" written on the envelope where the stamp goes, and the PO will send it.Or at least. that's they way it used to be.

We have drive-thru stand-alone ATM kiosks and drive-thru ATMs at the bank.

I only remember once going through a fast food drive thru in the Fiero that they didn't hand out the window.  The window was high, but it could have been a delay in my order.  They had me pull up to the end of the lane and my food was brought out pretty quickly.

Apparently, walking the food to the curb is an inconvenience.
