Mechanically sound, AC works, wanted $1500 or less
« on: June 11, 2010, 10:39:50 am »
Hi...

I don't think we've met most of you, though some will remember us well...

Lydia and I were members when we were ashore, and had a great time with the
group, including filming the test run I and another member did the year we
did the tail of the dragon; my Purple People Eater was one of the featured
cars on another year's t-shirt...

We're going to be ashore for a few weeks in July, and I'm looking for an
inexpensive car to leave so we have something to drive when we're back,
probably 1-2x year.

I'm looking for a Fiero under 1500, any color, year or style, working AC
and mechanically sound being the only criteria.  Does such a thing exist?

As I know that some candidates might be mechanically sound but much
disassembled, I guess I should also qualify that to include not needing any
work to put on the road.  I have very limited time and tools ashore, so
can't devote much to putting stuff back together, though I certainly know how!

Respondents can reach me at this address, as we usually have internet
access, believe it or not, wherever we are, through some wizardry I've
installed aboard.

Hope all is well with you all.  Impressive pic on the website - where was
that, presumed to be a RFTH gathering?

If you are going to be here on the 17th of July, please consider joining is in our Poker Run. If you don't have a Fiero by then, perhaps you could borrow one. I have two (they both run, and both have AC. ;) )

I'd dearly love to - but I'm going to be on a plane to New England that day...

Welcome back.  You posted just in time.  Check out the next thread that TopNotch just posted for the little 4-banger.  Needs a fuel pump.  You could buy it, have Don or Ashby pick it up, and have it ready when you get here.

Good thought!  I'd rejected it cuz it needed a pump (and the fuel tank drop, of course!), and I just won't have ANY time to work on anything.

I see Ashby's son is working, now, too...

Thanks!  I'm in the middle of the ocean at the moment and can't call - would one of you mind letting her know of this, and give her my email (skipgundlach@gmail.com)?

A 1988 Formula just popped up on Craigslist for $1500 at http://atlanta.craigslist.org/sat/cto/1798206777.html. There's an email address in the ad.

Thanks for the lead.  Unfortunately, the addy is a blind box for Craigslist, and while I've mailed them, the other 10 cars I've mailed with essentially the same letter (other than this one referencing Fiero experience and preference) have not responded in a week or so, so I have low expectations of different results here...

However, I'll follow up when I get ashore, should there be any hope for it.  Anyone recommend an Earl-Schieb type paint job which will not break the budget (it's at the top of my budget as is)?

Thanks again.

I wrote to him, and he said it works great. So if you wrote, he may have answered you also. Perhaps you should ask him to hold the car for you.

Thanks for the encouragement.  It was right before my last reply, so, even though it's not yet happened, I'm hopeful, now :{))

This is my boilerplate letter to car ads (this particular one had the Fiero starter, as it's the only one I've had of those; all the other <$1500 candidates got the rest of it):

Hi,

I saw your ad in Craigslist...

I'm a former GA Fiero Club member, but sold my three when I got on the boat
several years ago. Turns out I need a vehicle for when I get home
occasionally, and a Fiero is my first choice...

We live full time on a boat offshore, but will return to visit family
occasionally.  One such time is coming up in 2 weeks. We'll be in Rabun
County, for much of it, and then also in Alpharetta, Cumming and Carrollton.
I'll have a very limited time ashore, as well as a very limited time for
running around, or I'd not bother writing and would instead just call (which
is tricky now, in the middle of the ocean!) for this, or do it when I'm
ashore for several weeks, soon.

I'm looking for a mechanically sound car, with working AC.  The rest is of
little importance, so long as it doesn't need work to be both safe and
driveable.  While I'm capable of most car-type work, I won't have the time
to do any of it during my times ashore, so reliability is key.  Cosmetics
and other niceties important to most folks are of little import to me as it
will just be a getting-around car for when we're ashore.  It will be in a
non-emissions county, so even that's not important.

Due to my limited time for running around, if you have any reservations
about your car meeting my needs, I'd appreciate knowing about it, so that I
don't tie up the scarce time I'll have ashore discovering that.  Of course,
it would be a cash purchase - literally, if that's useful to you.

Please let me know if I should keep your car on my short list to pursue when
I'm ashore in July.  From the ad, everything looks good, so far - but I know
that sometimes ads aren't all that informative!

Thanks.

Skip, I've had little luck in replying to the blind address unless I cut and paste it into my own email system.  Outlook Express used by Craigslist just doesn't cut it.  I open up MSN or GMail and paste it into the address line.
