Notchback Trunk Lock Issue
« on: July 25, 2011, 08:41:39 pm »
I feel like a moron!  :(
Wanted to add a power trunk release to the 84, got the solenoid, installed it, but have not connected the power yet, and slammed the trunk shut.

Yes, I know, I should have tested it without closing the trunk, but cranial flatulence / senior moment set in and I closed it. Now I can't get it to open, not even with the key!

Now what?

Any advice?

Do you have the correct key for the lock?  If you do, then you need to get hold of Don or Ashby.
There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

If the 84's are like other years, the trunk release wire is in a plug near the passenger side trunk hinge. on other cars, the wire is already there, even if the release option is not installed. You make have to fish a wire through the trunk down to that area to make use of it. I had to on my 88 coupe.
I also had to add a relay under the dash, and put in a trunk switch. All wires under the dash were already there.
The more complex the mind, the greater the need for the simplicity of play.

As I have an 86 lid, the wires are already in it.
The 84 didn't use the horn/trunk release relay. All other wires are in place, even behind the bezel. Put in a switch and connected it.
I noticed on the 85 that the wire comes up on the driver's side to the trunk lid and not on the right side.
The 84 has quite a few differences I'm finding out, especially the electrical circuitry.

Found another difference between the 84 and later models;
Trunk release only works with the ignition on. Not much of a safety feature. At least on the newer models the ignition has to either be off, E-brake engaged (manual) or in park (auto).
I'm assuming that's why relays were used in later models.

I'm wondering if I can rewire it to pop at least with ignition off (always hot)?? Main reason I want to do that is so I can install remote keyless entry and remote trunk release, which won't work if ignition is required to pop the lid.

I already dread disassembling the doors  :(
