What a Surprise!!!
« on: January 17, 2009, 07:37:48 pm »
The ETFC had their club meeting today and we got a big surprise. I was in the parking lot waiting on everybody to get there when I noticed some familiar but unexpected Fiero's coming into the parking lot. Here comes Charlie, Kevin and his brother, and Dewey from the Georgia Fiero Club. That just made my day. Then Glen, Derek and his Girlfriend, and Rick (in his Solstice), Reese II and his wife, Julio drove his truck, then Darrell and Janice showed up. Counting me that's 14. But enough talk here's some pix.

I'm on the phone with Charlie, he went back across Fort Mountain in the snow and spun out going down the south side and ended up in the ditch. It didn't hurt him or the car and he drove right out. He's almost home now. I'll let him post the details of the accident.

Just got in about 45 minutes ago.  It started light snow flurries when Robbie was taking the above pictures.  We had a little tech and bull session then Kevin, Dewey and I headed back home.  Dewey left us in Chatsworth and continued down US 441 and Kevin and I headed up over Fort Mountain.  Now, mind you, as we drove from Athens to Chatsworth the snow was getting a little harder.

I think we made it up the mountain to the first curve when the roadway turned white.  A few more turns and I was down to 3rd gear and +- ~ 30 mph and the bobbles were getting more frequent.  We made it over the mountain without incident and down the other side, but we were still running 20-30 all the way.

We were maybe halfway between the mountain and Ellijay, still in 3rd, going up a hill and the car broke loose.  It went all the way
around to the left and off into the right ditch just past a driveway.  It was about to take off the nose on the embankment until the front wheel caught traction on the dirt and it flipped the rear around parallel to the bank and I rolled uphill into the ditch.

Put it in reverse and backed away from the driveway, uphill, too.  Heck, I should have stayed in the ditch.  I had much better traction than on the pavement.  Anyway, once I got far enough away from the driveway, I put her in low, drove right out, turned around in the said driveway and drove up the hill in low gear.

I-575 in Ellijay northbound was closed due to an accident on the bridge that crosses over the river and Hwy 52.  Bad driving all the way to the town square in Dawsonville, then there was nothing South of there.  After we crossed Ga. 400, it was back up to speed.

Charlie, Kevin, and Dewey I really do appreciate you all coming up today. I enjoyed having you all join us and I think Derek enjoyed it more than anybody. I think a lot of questions were asked and answered about the 3800SC swaps. And I think once we get one done we'll have to bring it down and let you all check it out. But I will return the favor and join you all at a meeting. And I'll bring a bunch with me.

I can't believe that's what it takes to get Darrell and Janice to a meeting.

I'm sorry I missed this one. I was planning on trying to come up too, but I the car still wasn't put back together. Finally finished about 3:00 PM yesterday.
Then I found out that the 4.9 inlet housing that I had welded up (asked a guy to remove the heater hose fitting and weld up the hole) has a pinhole in it where it was welded.

JB Weld time.  >:(
Anyone think it won't hold? Serious question.

Charlie, I didn't realize that you had attended the Don Hulse school of performance driving.
It appears that you studied hard, grasshopper.   ;)

I'm happy that nothing (including you) was hurt.

Maybe you can make the next trip. Charlie told me you wanted to come up. Sorry you couldn't make it, I would have loaned you my outlet out of mine. Serious answer, it should hold just be sure and push some in the hole so it will help hold from the other side.

With the antifreeze in the hole, you may have trouble getting the J&B to stick.  On the other hand, I've used it to plug dozens of rust holes in a gas tank while the gasoline was pouring out.  Like Robbie said, if you can get it to pass through the hole and mushroom it inside, you've got a much better chance.

That was the 3rd time I've lost it in ice or snow.  The first was on I=85 at about 65 MPH when I hit some black ice and it flipped around backwards.  Then Kevin and I were scouting the last Dragon RFTH and we encountered snow on the Cherohala.  Only then we were at about 25 mph, much like Saturday night.  Both of the last times we were going uphill and the car continued skidding uphill.

In the future, I WILL avoid snow when driving a Fiero.

Dewey, how did you do getting home?  Any problems?

The hole is only about 2.5" from the end of the pipe, facing the block. It's just a pinhole. I can see it when I put a flashlight between the pipe and the block, but it's too small to really feel anything.
I'm planning to put a glob on the inside, if I can get it clean enough. Then another glob on the outside. (Will it stick to paint if the paint is clean? There's really not enough room to get a grinder or anything up there. I can do a little bit of damage with a loose piece of sandpaper, or maybe scratch it up with a knife blade, but that's about it.)

I would take it off, but it looks like the only way to get the sucker off is to drop the A/C compressor. I really don't care to do all that, and risk breaking the seal on the water pump gasket. Again. Long story.

My wife keeps reminding me that this is what I do for fun.  ;D

charlie i just this minute read about your accident, man i'm glad you were able to handle that slide as well as you did and weren't hurt. i never saw any snow south of chatsworth just clear sailing, i got home about 10minutes to 7. i really appreciate your helping me with the car, maybe it will hold till spring when it's warmer for working outside and i'll get a new master cylinder. rob i really enjoyed coming up to your shop, you're really stocked with every part you could need for a fiero. if you don't mind i'd like to come up again sometime.    old in c'ville
