I have the 22P you sent me, as well as the hardcopy one in the picture.  The DIY and supplemental should be different.  At least, they are for 1986.  I'm just not sure they exist for 1988.

I saw an '88 manual that is about 5" thick.  I have one sortof like that, and a 2-piece one, and one that is about 4" thick.  What gives?

All this talk about manuals makes me envious.
Next to impossible to get over here.
Does anybody have an 88 SM they would be willing to sell.
I'm sure that alone the possesion of such a manual would reduce the questions I post here on the message board!

Well, if you can read electrical schematics, and get past the fact that there are many errors...

There are some helpful parts, but they omitted a lot of stuff.

It just so happens, I could get an almost pristine 87 SM here in Germany for under €40.
Is it worth it?

The only real difference is the oil filter and pump assembly. The 88 incorporates a "force balancer" - basically a set of counterweights on the oil pump shaft - and the oil filter is a bare cartridge that resides inside the pan. Is removed by unthreading the huge plug in the bottom of the pan.
All the electronics and sensors should be the same. 

Of course, there are the 88 brake and suspension changes.

Makes changing the oil lots of fun -- NOT!
Actually there is one other difference  between the 87 and 88 duke -- where the heater hose connects to the intake manifold. On the 87, it's over the coil pack assembly, so if it leaks, water gets on the coil packs. It was moved to the other side for 88.
